Today we’re going back four decades in time to take a look at some of the most iconic hotels in Southport town centre.

With its rolling sand dunes, beautiful coastline and fresh seaside air, Southport was created as a seaside resort.

Some of our grandest hotels date back to the Victorian era and beyond and still welcome guests to this day.

Our first image shows The Bold Hotel on Lord Street, pictured in July 1983.

The historic Grade II Listed building is now owned by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group, which has transformed the ‘Northern Quarter’ of Lord Street by also opening The Grand, the Lord Street Hotel, Mavericks Top Gun themed bar and Punch Tarmey’s Irish themed bar.

The Bold has recently reopened after a substantial refurbishment of the restaurant, kitchen and rooms, along with a new menu and an even better carvery.

Our next picture shows staff at The Prince Of Wales Hotel on Lord Street in Southport in February 1981.

Do you know what they were celebrating?

There are some very fine chef’s hats on display, with waiting-on staff looking very smart in suits and tuxedos.

The Prince of Wales features and Ice Dien motto are seen above the entrance to the hotel.

The Prince Of Wales is now one of three in Southport town centre operated by Britannia Hotels, along with The Scarisbrick Hotel and The Royal Clifton Hotel.

Next up we have an image of the Stutelea Hotel and Leisure Club on Alexandra Road in Southport.

The picture was taken some time in the 1980s. Do you recognise the type of car in front of the hotel?

The family-run hotel was renowned for its excellent facilities and its top class customer care.

Next we have the Red Rum Hotel and Restaurant on Lord Street in Southport in the 1980s.

The venue was named of course after the world’s greatest ever racehorse, Red Rum, who won three Grand Nationals in the 1970s.

Rummy was stabled in Birkdale and famously ran along Southport Beach.

Downstairs in this picture you can see Rummie’s Bar, an old fashioned snug. It was a cosy place to be.

The venue is now The Carlton bar and beer garden on the ground floor, with apartments above.

Finally, we have a general view of Lord Street in Southport, including Wayfarers Shopping Arcade, in April 1983.

The street is looking very busy! Lord Street and Wayfarers Arcade remain popular places for local residents and tourists to visit.
