Burnley Women’s star Dom Cooper joined Southport Trinity AFC for a special training session to mark the start of the Lionesses World Cup campaign.

The defender put Trinity’s four girls’ teams and players from its FA Wildcats development centre through their paces on Saturday morning before taking part in a Q&A session.

The event saw all the girls’ teams joined together for the first time and the players returned to the Rookery after training to watch England’s 1-0 victory over Haiti with Dom.

Southport Trinity is the town’s oldest amateur football club and welcomed its first girls team two years ago. Its Wildcats sessions have also proved hugely popular and led to a major increase and participation which has led to the new teams being created.

In the coming season, the club will run a Under 8s girls team for the first time as well as welcoming new boys teams. Plans are also progressing to create an open age female team.

Everyone at the club would like to extend a big thanks to Dom for giving up her time to support the club and for giving an unforgettable experience to the girls. Dom wished the teams the best of the luck for the coming season.

Craig Houghton, chairman of Southport Trinity AFC, said:

“It is fantastic to see the growth of girls’ football. Over the last few years we have seen interest and participation explode and we are delighted to be at the forefront of this – especially as the only FA accredited Wildcats Development Centre in the local area.

“We were delighted to welcome Dom Cooper and know this is another point of inspiration for our girls.
