Mike Smith will perform at Southport Jazz Festival

A Southport saxophone sensation who has starred with some of the biggest names in music is returning to perform in his home town this Sunday (4th February 2024). 

Mike Smith will be performing with the Jazz Quintet featuring Jamie Brownfield at Southport Jazz Festival at The Grand on Lord Street in Southport at 1pm.

Southport Festival Directors Jez Murphy, Emma Holcroft and Cliff Ray said: “We are delighted to be able to bring to you one of the UK’s finest saxophonists, backed by a stellar rhythm section and also featuring trumpet superstar Jamie Brownfield. 

“Prepare to be thoroughly entertained as they deliver a mixture of Mike’s original compositions together with fresh takes on well known jazz classics.

“Band leader and friend of the festival Mike Smith hails from Southport.

“He is a versatile saxophonist and keyboardist who has amassed a 20-year career in the professional music industry, gracing the stages of numerous events alongside well-known artists.

“He maintains an active role as a regular sideman for acclaimed musicians such as Elkie Brooks, Echo & the Bunnymen, Tony Hadley, Kid Creole, Heather Small, ABC, and Sandi Thom. “Currently, he enjoys a prestigious collaboration as the sax and keys player for CREAM CLASSICS shows with K-Klass and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the international brand CREAM.” 

The band;

  • Andrzej Baranek: Accomplished pianist, known for sharing the stage with renowned UK jazz artists like Dave O’Higgins and Enrico Tomasso, recognized as a sought-after accompanist in the North West region.
  • Ed Harrison: Highly sought-after double bassist with exceptional technique and adaptability, boasting extensive experience from the Prague and London jazz scenes, collaborating with prominent figures across the country.
  • Jack Cotterill: Exceptional jazz drummer with a deep understanding of jazz history, mastery of dynamics, and a strong sense of collaboration, delivering electrifying swing in his drumming.
  • Jamie Brownfield: Professional trumpeter from the North West, leading the Jamie Brownfield Quartet and sought-after as a session musician nationwide. His global musical journey has taken him to various prestigious festivals and events, and he’s collaborated with notable artists, showcasing his versatility in venues from intimate clubs to grand arenas. Jamie’s latest album, featuring strings, is his most recent endeavour, and his previous CD was recognized on BBC Radio 2 by Jamie Cullum
