Hundreds of runners will enjoy the 13th Southport Mad Dog 10k run sponsored by Jollyes - The Pet People

Puppy love will be everywhere when hundreds of runners enjoy the 13th Southport Mad Dog 10k run sponsored by Jollyes – The Pet People this weekend.

One of the most highly rated 10k races in the UK has a different movie theme each year.

This year it is ‘Barkbie’, in honour of the recent Barbie cinema blockbuster.

Previous themes have included ‘Hairy Potter’; ‘Jurassic Bark’; ‘Live And Let Drool’; ‘Game of Bones’; and ‘Bark To The Future’.

A team of runners from Jollyes The Pet People from across the UK will be among people taking part in the race this Sunday (4th February 2024) along with their Jollyes Joe their dog mascot.

If anyone is there this weekend please share your Southport Mad Dog 10k images into our Stand Up For Southport Facebook group.

You won’t be able to miss the fundraisers from the Southport Saviours charity, running to raise money for new defibrillators while dressed as a wedding party – including Richard Moore in a flowing wedding dress and trainers.

Nearly 60 people will be taking part from the Southport Strollers Running Club.

Many people will be running in a variety of fancy dress, with a trophy due to be presented to the best outfit on the day.

There will be cash prizes for the winners of the Men’s and Women’s races: £200 for the winner; £140 for runner-up; and £80 for third place.

Peter Brooks from the Mad Dog team said:

“We are looking forward to welcoming all our runners at the 2024 Southport Mad Dog 10k this Sunday!

“We have seen even more people sign up this year than last year, it will be a superb spectacle.

“In addition to hundreds of runners, we will have six live bands or musical acts to serenade our runners as they make their way around the course so it should be very colourful and entertaining.

“We would love to see people come down and watch the event and support the runners taking part.

“We are delighted to have the support of Jollyes The Pet People as our headline sponsor for the iconic Southport Mad Dog 10k race.

“They are also entering Team Jollyes, putting their best paw forward to take part on race day, and are promoting the Mad Dog run through their nearby stores, as well as adding goodies to our Mad Dog 10k goodie bags.”

Southport Mad Dog 10k has consistently been named in ‘The UK’s Best 10ks’ by various running organisations including the National Running Awards.

A popular community event, it has raised tens of thousands of pounds for a variety of local charities and good causes.

It was founded by Southport Hesketh Round Table which continues to support the event.

Jollyes is now helping to take the run to the next level by becoming the headline sponsor.

Jollyes’ head of marketing Phil Turner-Naylor said:

“We know how loved the Southport Mad Dog 10k is, not only in Sefton but right across the North West.

“With an increasing number of Jollyes locations right across the region, we’re delighted to be partnering with the Mad Dog team.

“There’ll be a very special guest too in our Mad Dog running team – our mascot Jollyes Joe will be taking part in its first-ever run!”

Everyone is welcome at the Southport Mad Dog 10k as the event caters for runners of all types, regardless of experience.

Competitors can enjoy a great atmosphere, goody bags, medals, chip timing, on course live entertainment, free parking, and free transport to the start.

The ambition is to raise even more money for local charities and good causes this year.

Runners start and finish at Stanley High School, running along the coast past Southport Beach, Southport Pier, and alongside the Marine Lake.

In addition to the Mad Dog 10k is the Crazy Pups race which is dedicated to under 16s.

The Pups race starts at 10am with the main race starting at 10.40am.
