Children’s A&E at Ormskirk Hospital will be closed from 10pm until 8am, starting from tonight, and until further notice.
Ambulance patients from the Southport and West Lancashire areas will be taken directly to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.
The measure is being taken to help staff at Southport Hospital and Ormskirk Hospital cope during the current coronavirus pandemic.
A Southport & Ormskirk NHS Hospitals Trust spokesman said: “We know this is not ideal for many people, but we cannot safely staff it at the moment, due to clinical team members being redeployed to help with the Covid-19 crisis.
“If you need to call an ambulance for a child, you will be taken to Alder Hey during this time.
“The decision has not been taken lightly, and we sincerely apologise for this inconvenience.
“Thank you all for the ongoing support during this challenging time.”
