Ernest Van Sitters

By Andrew Brown, Stand Up for Southport

In a world that’s constantly on the move, it’s refreshing to meet someone like Ernest van Sitters, who has brought a touch of international glamour to the heart of Southport.

From the sunny shores of Cape Town to the bustling streets of Leeds and now the serene waterside of Southport, Ernest has embarked on an adventure that is bound to redefine luxury, hospitality, and more in the charming town of Southport.

I sat down with Ernest to learn more about his journey, his experiences, and his vision for Waterfront Southport Hotel as the venue’s Director of Sales and Marketing.

Andrew Brown: Ernest, thank you for taking the time to chat with us today. You’ve had an incredible journey in the international events and hospitality industry. Could you tell us more about how you landed in Southport?

Ernest van Sitters: My journey to Southport began when my wife, Dr. Megan Robertson, took up a post-doc research position through the Marie Curie Fellowship at Leeds University. I was a good husband, left my job back home, packed our bags and set sail, metaphorically speaking, from Cape Town to the UK. It was a big change, but it opened up exciting opportunities.

AB: And now, you’ve taken on the role of Director of Sales and Marketing at Waterfront Southport Hotel. Can you tell us what attracted you to this position?

EVS: The Waterfront Southport Hotel is a hidden gem. It was a serendipitous moment when I discovered this opportunity. With my background in the Cape Town International Convention Centre and my time at Messe Frankfurt, where I focused on boating and fashion portfolios, I was eager to take on this role. Plus, I’m a fan of a good challenge, and the prospect of enhancing Southport’s appeal to the international community excited me – especially given the developments next door, where construction is underway on creating the £73 million Marine Lake Events Centre.

AB: You’ve certainly worked on some impressive events like the World Economic Forum on Africa, the World Travel Market, All Fashion Sourcing Africa, the International Jazz Festival. Can you share any memorable moments from those experiences?

EVS: Oh, there are so many! But if I had to pick one, it would have to be the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. After months of planning the operations and logistics and seeing it all come together with over 20,000 people a night, this is one event that will always stay with me. Just seeing people enjoying the music, each others’ company, and dancing to some of the world’s most celebrated musicians… it’s amazing!

AB: That sounds like quite the adventure! Now, let’s switch gears a bit. We hear you have a favourite dish at the hotel. Tell us more about it.

EVS: I absolutely adore the Lancashire lamb rump off our a la carte menu. It’s a culinary masterpiece curated by our wonderful Executive Chef, Anthony Dunbar. This, paired with a glass of the 2019 Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon from our wine menu, it’s a match made in heaven.

AB: Now, let’s talk about your vision for Waterfront Southport Hotel. What are your goals in this new role?

EVS: My vision for the hotel is to create a buzz. While the last few years, since Covid, has been a bit of a challenging time for the hotel, I have made it my mission to make sure everyone knows about Waterfront Southport Hotel and the incredible experiences we offer. We’re looking to partner with local businesses, showcase England’s Golf Coast to the world, and attract more international interest. With the Marine Lake Events Centre on the horizon, we have an exciting future ahead, and I want to be a part of putting Southport back on the map.

I’d like to invite everyone to come and experience the magic of Waterfront Southport Hotel.

Whether it’s for a night’s stay, a delightful afternoon tea, or capturing the views and vibes on our roof terrace, we’d love to welcome you. And please, don’t hesitate to say hi when you’re here. I’m always up for a chat and a good laugh!
