Southport’s towering new attraction is now open!

The Big Wheel Southport is 35 metres high, is illuminated at night and offers stunning views across the North West coastline on one side, with the Marine Lake and Southport on the other.

It is the latest new attraction to be unveiled by Southport Pleasureland as it continues to offer new and exciting experiences to visitors.

Prices range from £6 for adults, £5 for children (under 16) and senior citizens, and £20 family tickets (two adults and two children or one adult and three children), with each ride seeing the wheel completing two revolutions – plenty of opportunity to get that perfect picture or video for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube or TikTok.

Keen photographers have already been submitting some superb shots of The Big Wheel Southport into our Stand Up For Southport Facebook group since people began enjoying rides over Easter weekend.

The 35-metre tall wheel offers visitors unparalleled 360-degree long-ranging views from the highest accessible vantage-point in Southport.

The attraction has transformed a neglected corner of Southport. Thousands of pounds have been spent on creating an attractive environment around the wheel with new plants, fresh turf and landscaped grounds.

The Big Wheel Southport has 24 cars, with six passengers per car and one accessible car which can carry passengers in a wheelchair.

Visitors will be able to choose a daytime slot between 10am and 6pm, or a ‘night flight’ between 6pm and 9pm.

Each flight lasts approximately 10 minutes and provides riders with spectacular views across the town of Southport, over towards Liverpool, the Ribble Estuary, the hills of North Wales and the Lake District, Winter Hill and beyond.

People will soon be able to enjoy drinks in the Alpine Village at the base of the wheel while they wait, or if they choose to stay a while longer they can enjoy a bite to eat after they have enjoyed the spectacular views, with construction work continuing to take place.

The Big Wheel Southport is also available for private hire, for anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion, or who wants a private flight for their company. Email info@bigwheelsouthport.com for more details.

Southport Pleasureland will be offering VIP flight packages on special dates during the year, with more details on its social media channels.

The 35-metre high wheel is the highest accessible vantage-point near the seafront, and will offer long-ranging, wide-vista views to passengers in its six-person glass pods.

Its LED lighting can be tailored to offer spectacular, eye-catching displays which will be reflected in the lake’s waters after dark.

The wheel has been created by Universal Rides, owned by Norman Wallis, who operates Southport Pleasureland and Southport Pleasureland Miniature Railway.

When he unveiled his plans, he said: “The wheel is a real show-stopper and I think the town deserves a landmark feature of this calibre and we believe it will be incredibly popular.

“The views will be breath-taking and the observation wheel itself will be able to be clearly seen when approaching the town.

“This fabulous iconic feature will give people yet another reason to stop and admire the sea views – and make a hugely positive addition to Southport’s visitor appeal.”
