Is this how a transformed Southport Train Station could soon look?
The current building, on Chapel Street, is often slated as Britain’s ugliest railway station.
For such a picturesque town, it is not the ideal first impression for visitors.
But it could be replaced by a spectacular state-of-the-art interchange facility, including train / bus / pedestrian / and cycle.
The scheme would also include a new multi-storey car park, offices, cafes and convenience shops.
The drawing of the potential scheme which has released is only ‘conceptual’ at this stage so may change in both in terms of location and design if the scheme is progressed.
Southport has not had a bus station since the closure of The Ribble Bus Station on Lord Street many years ago.
A bus interchange on London Street, next to Southport Trail Station, was among the initial plans for the pedestrianisation of Chapel Street. The pedestrianisation work was completed in 2007, but the bus station scheme was not progressed.
The new transport interchange is one of a number of ‘Big Ideas’ released on Monday under the Southport Town Deal process, with people being asked for their views on a variety of proposals.
Southport is one of 100 towns in the UK which each have the chance to put together schemes which will regenerate their communities as they bid for up to £25million.
Ideas being put forward in Southport include transforming Southport train station; focusing the main shopping area on a smaller area of the town centre; and replacing former department stores Beales and Debenhams with new uses.
