The very best photos of Southport are being sought in a new competition designed to promote our town while helping to raise money for Southport Foodbank.

The Southport Photo Competition is being organised by local charity Compassion Acts, in association with Stand Up for Southport, with a prize for the best entry from Morrisons.

Compassion Acts, which operates Southport Foodbank, Food Pantry and a debt and welfare advice service, is hoping to find great photos they can use in charity cards, a calendar and other fundraising opportunities. The foodbank has seen increased numbers of people using the service during the pandemic and fundraising is vital to plan for the future as the economic downturn starts to take effect.

Stand Up For Southport, which publishes a community news website in addition to a number of social media sites, aims to create a positive voice for Southport and celebrate the best of its people, places, events, charities and local businesses.

The Southport Photo Competition, which opens this Friday (19 June) and runs until Thursday, 30 July, will choose up to 12 winning entries, each representing a scene or season from Southport and the surrounding area.

There will be one main prize, a lovely hamper donated by sponsor Morrisons supermarket in Southport . Photographers will get a name credit and information about the winners will be used in publicity.

Compassion Acts Chief Executive Richard Owens said: “It’s a chance to celebrate all that is good about our area.

“The lockdown period has been tough but we have also seen some creative and inspiring images being created. The people, places and passions of our town tell their own stories of resilience and recovery. Something to be proud of.

“Winners of the competition will be included in our fundraising materials for 2021 which will be sold across the area. So it’s a chance to show off your skills!

“We have been flat out,  every single day since the Covid-19 crisis began, helping people from a range of backgrounds whether it’s debt advice, emergency food packages or access to our Food Pantry. This Autumn we expect to be the busiest yet. Although the competition is a bit of fun, and free to enter, of course we always welcome donations, so please do get in touch with us.”

Stand Up For Southport founder Andrew Brown said: “Since we launched Stand Up For Southport in December, we have been astonished to have grown to have more than 11,000 members in our Facebook group alone, with over 15,000 people following our various social media sites.

“It shows just how much people in our town love Southport, how much pride they have in where they live.

“We see stunning pictures of our beautiful town on a regular basis in our groups, so I am sure people will be delighted to have the chance of showing off Southport at its very best, while also helping a superb local charity which is doing immense work to help people in our community who are facing huge challenges during this pandemic.

“Please help Stand Up For Southport and Compassion Acts to help celebrate the very best of our town. ”

Stand Up For Southport co-owner Phil Gee said: “I have been delighted to play a part in keeping people’s spirits up during lockdown, together with Andrew Brown, using the Stand Up For Southport Facebook Group to try to focus on the positive aspects. I hope we have done our town proud. We are delighted to be part of the Southport Photo Competition, to partner up with such an amazing organisation which has helped countless people during this time.”
