Potted shrimps at Peets Plaice in Churchtown in Southport

A Southport fish shop owner has given his tips on the best seafood to wow your partner this Valentine’s Day.

Kevin Peet, who owns Peets Plaice fish shop near Churchtown lights in Churchtown, has been a fisherman off the local coast for the past 40 years.

His Peets Plaice shop is open today (Saturday) for anyone looking to source the perfect Valentine’s Day recipe, while he also provides a home delivery service in the local area.

Kevin said: “We have a wide variety of fresh and frozen seafood available today!

“We are always very busy in the run-up to Valentine’s Day, where seafood is always really popular.

“Our freshly sourced shellfish is always perfect for Valentine’s Day, with top quality produce including oysters, scallops and lobster tails – you can’t beat something a bit special like that.

“Southport is famous for our local brown shrimps, and you can take away our home made Peets Plaice potted shrimps. They are perfect with some brown toast for a simple but delicious starter.

“We also have a variety of fresh prawns or frozen bags of prawns, which you can use to make delicious dishes such as prawn cocktails, avocado and prawns, prawn salads and lots more besides.”

There is also lots on offer for main courses, with fillets of fresh fish such as cod, haddock, halibut and tuna, and stylish frozen meals such as cod or haddock wellington.

Kevin Peet is also now home smoking his own fish, to the delight of local shoppers.

He bought an impressive new smoker after getting the idea during lockdown.

It means he can home smoke freshly caught fish such as cod and haddock which he then takes to sell either in his own shop, or through his home delivery service.

He has been fishing off the coast of Southport since the age of 10, when he used to head out to sea with his dad.

Along with wife Nicola he opened his Peets Plaice shop in Churchtown seven years ago, after moving from Southport Market.

He said: “During lockdown I had the idea of investing in my own smoker.

“I have converted space at my home in Marshside. I buy fish freshly caught at Fleetwood, take it back, brine it, and then smoke it. The process takes around three hours.

“I then take it straight to my Peets Plaice shop and sell it there, but I can also home deliver it too.

“So far I have been preparing natural smoked cod and haddock.

“I will be smoking these fish daily, so you will be guaranteed to get them fresh when you buy them from our shop.

“It is a very simple thing to cook.

“With smoked haddock or cod, you get the best results by steaming it over water for around ten minutes.

“Some of my older customers tell me they always cook it in milk.

“If you have it for breakfast, you can enjoy it with a couple of poached eggs on top.

“At teatime, it is nice with some potatoes and veg on the side.

“Some people also make other recipes with it, such as kedgeree.

“Smoked fish is really tasty, and very healthy for you too.”
