Lord Street in Southport is set to undergo some exciting changes in 2022!
Here are some of the changes that you will be able to see, with more news yet to be announced.
The most striking of these is ‘The Tower Of Hope’, with the plans revealed today, but other sites are also in line for redevelopment.
Two years ago, Stand Up For Southport played our part in the consultation for Southport Town Deal. We received over 7,000 responses from people telling us their priorities for how Southport should be improved.
Two major themes soon emerged – people wanted to see a replacement for Southport Theatre & Convention Centre, which had closed in March 2019, and they also wanted to see the rejuvenation of Lord Street.
Sefton Council is now progressing plans for a £75million new Marine Lake Events Centre on the Southport Theatre site. And now millions of pounds of new investment is pouring into Lord Street too.
Last year we saw superb new investment for Lord Street with the opening of the Beales department store, while Southport BID created the ‘boulevard of light’ with 300,000 lights along the street. Independent new businesses including The Old Bank, House Of Ivy, Royales and others also opened.
Positive interest in the area is set to continue.
Here are some of the reasons to feel positive about Lord Street in Southport in 2022:
1 – The Tower Of Hope

Designed to be one of the North’s tallest towers, The Tower Of Hope will be built on the site of the former Grand Casino on Lord Street, preserving the best of this Grade II Listed building while creating a brand new landmark for Southport.
It would be one of the tallest buildings outside of London.
Standing 48 stories high, it would include: 140 high quality residential apartments, a top quality restaurant, 109 five star hotel rooms, a wedding venue, a fun-themed bar and a substantial car park.
Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group is leading the scheme, which would add to its other successful venues on Lord Street including: The Bold Hotel, the Lord Street Hotel, Lord Street Sports Bar and Punch Tarmey’s Irish Pub, while also operating the feature bar inside Southport Market.
2 – Wetherspoon Hotel

Expect more quality new hotel rooms arriving in Southport this year and over the next few years, as the staycation boom continues and as our resort develops plans to attract new visitors.
Sefton Council’s recent Hotel and Visitor Accommodation Study identified a need for a significantly increased supply of hotel bed spaces, particularly in Southport.
Building work is currently taking place to create a brand new Wetherspoon hotel in Southport town centre.
The hotel is being created in the historic four-storey Pavilion Buildings on the corner of Lord Street and Coronation Walk, above the existing Wetherspoon Sir Henry Segrave pub.
It will see the creation of 28 new en-suite bedrooms.
3 – Garrick Theatre / Mecca Bingo

What does the future hold for the beautiful former Garrick Theatre / Mecca Bingo building in Southport?
We would love to know! This site, which has huge potential, was sold in October last year.
The historic art deco building had been empty since Mecca Bingo announced in April 2021 that it would not be reopening its doors after being closed for a number of months during lockdown.
The magnificent art deco building on Garrick Parade, just off the Lord Street boulevard, was built in 1932 and once hosted world famous stars of stage and screen including Julie Andrews, Laurel and Hardy and many others.
After the closure of Mecca Bingo in April it faced an uncertain future and was put up for sale with independent property consultancy Allsop.
Allsop placed a guide price of between £700,00 and £750,000 on the building, and was due to place it in an auction in November. But the firm said it was “inundated” with offers, with one of them accepted by the owner leading to its subsequent removal from the auction list.
It is not yet known who the new owner is, or what their plans are for the site.
4 – 509-515 Lord Street

This is a really important development for Southport for so many reasons.
The landmark site at 509-515 Lord Street, on the corner with Bold Street, is the first major project being supported by the Southport Townscape Heritage Project.
The scheme will improve the historic features on one of the key buildings on Lord Street, as well as creating two new retail units and nine new apartments in a continued trend of attracting more people to live in the town centre.
As well as revitalising one of the most historic buildings on Lord Street – previously a vacant eyesore – it is also one of the ‘gateway’ buildings at the bottom of Bold Street, which will lead directly to the new entrance of the brand new £70m Marine Lake Events Centre.
On the opposite corner of the junction, new owners have now taken over the former Casa Italia restaurant. Sapori Italian Restaurant has just opened next door to that.
5 – Southport Townscape Heritage Project

Southport Townscape Heritage Project is a five year scheme.
The primary aim is to target specific historic buildings on Lord Street, such as 509-515 Lord Street, and elsewhere within the town centre.
The STHP aims to encourage owners to carry out the type of repairs which retain original character yet bring them into full 21st century working use.
The buildings were assessed taking various factors into account including their heritage features, what they bring to the historic environment, location and likely repair costs.
Southport Townscape Heritage Project is now working with the owners of all target buildings and the public will soon be able to spot National Lottery Heritage Fund logo boards and interpretation boards which will describe the individual projects.
It’s all about encouraging locals and visitors to appreciate Southport’s varied and historically important Victorian architecture and its seaside heritage.
6 – Scarisbrick Avenue and Cambridge Arcade

Sefton Council has recognised that it is not just Lord Street which needs rejuvenating – but crucially the linkages that lead to and from it too.
Areas being targeted this year include Scarisbrick Avenue and the historic Cambridge Arcade, while the Southport Townscape Heritage Project’s work on the building at the corner of Lord Street and Bold Street will provide a welcome boost to Bold Street too.
The council recently unveiled a £1million plan to revamp Southport nightlife hub Scarisbrick Avenue.
A package of works worth nearly £1million are proposed including new, high quality paving, enhanced street lighting, improved pedestrian crossings, environmental additions and rejuvenated signage and CCTV equipment.
The works are intended to be completed in time for the 2022 summer season.
The route is home to some superb independent local businesses including Avenue, Spender’s, Chop House, the Dolphin Chippy, Hideaway, Concept Food Bar and others, in addition to the side of The Scarisbrick Hotel.
Spender’s bar owners Paul and Chantelle Drewery said: “We’re very excited and it will make a huge difference to this very important part of the town!”
It is hoped the scheme will greatly improve the popular walkway, which connects the heart of Southport Town Centre with the Promenade and seafront.
The top end of Scarisbrick Avenue is home to the famous four-storey Red Rum mural, painted by local artist Paul Curtis, a highlight of Sefton’s Borough of Culture celebrations.
Nearly £400,000 will be spent to improve the canopy at historic Cambridge Walks and Cambridge Arcade in Southport.
7 – New restaurants

Southport town centre is starting 2022 with the arrival of FIVE new restaurants for diners!
Four of the new eateries are on Lord Street, with a fifth venue on Bold Street.
It provides a further boost for our town’s growing hospitality sector, with new businesses taking up empty units and giving people more reasons to visit our town.
There is real choice for diners too with the choice including Italian food, Thai food, a steakhouse, and more.
The new restaurants on Lord Street include: Sapori Italian Restaurant and Bar; Casa Italia; Mae Thai and The Feather Blade Steakhouse, while Larkins Cafe Bar Eatery has opened on Bold Street.
8 – Southport Town Hall

Building work is taking place at Southport Town Hall to make the landmark site more energy efficient.
The work began with scaffolding going up at the start of COP26, as Sefton Council asked local residents, businesses and partners to make a pledge to reduce their carbon emissions.
The scaffolding and building work that passers-by can now see at Southport Town Hall, on Lord Street, is in relation to energy efficiency and insulation works which will be taking place over the next few months.
It is the result of Sefton Council’s successful £800,000 funding bid to the Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund.
The project will reduce heat loss and restore the building’s historic features.
A specialist heritage contractor is undertaking the work, ensuring that key historic features are maintained and protected.
9 – Wayfarers Arcade

This beautiful Victorian arcade suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic.
But it began bouncing back last year, with the opening of Beales department store; the Remedy at Beales cafe; and the Naked Peak shop selling organic and vegan candles and body products.
Naked Peak has taken up two vacant units in the arcade, and is due to also move into a third.
Owners have received more interest in businesses keen to take up new units.
Wayfarers Arcade is a Grade II Listed structure on Lord Street.
The arcade is a near untouched building with the glass dome and Victorian shop fronts below it, creating a shopping arcade.
10 – The Western Quarter

The Northern Quarter of Lord Street has seen huge investment in recent years.
Good things are now happening at The Western Quarter, with new investment at the Garrick Theatre / former Mecca Bingo site, while work is taking place to build a Wetherspoon Hotel in the Pavilion Buildings.
The area has also seen a number of local independent businesses opening, including Tik Taco, Fennee Kay Hair & Beauty, Dental Arts @ 23 Lord Street, Royales and more.
Expect lots more news about the Western Quarter in 2022.
