Southport FC and Southport Brewery have launched a new IPA which pays tribute to club legend Billy Bingham MBE.

The new SFC IPA will go on sale for the first time at this Saturday’s home game against Farsley Celtic and will be available in all bars in the ground.

Billy Bingham MBE sadly died in June at the age of 90.

was appointed as a coach at  Haig Avenue in June 1965, and was appointed as manager at the end of the year, before leading Southport to promotion from the Fourth Division in his first managerial post.

He went on to enjoy further managerial success with teams including Everton and Northern Ireland, most notably at the 1982 World Cup.

Mr Bingham was awarded an MBE for his services to football in 1981.

A Southport FC spokesperson said: “We are delighted to announce our latest collaboration with Southport Brewery with the release of our very own IPA (or India Pale Ale).

“Southport Brewery already provides great support to the Club by way of its sponsorship of the man of the match award at each home game and provides a special gift box of beers to the winner. In return, we are pleased to stock a range of its products in our 1881 Bar and Lounge, as well as in our outdoor bars at both ends of the stadium.

Southport FC and Southport Brewery have launched a new IPA

“Southport Brewery was established in 2004 by Paul Bardsley and his approach is making beer that reflects our local area with great brands and beers such as Sandgrounder Bitter, Golden Sands and Old Shrimper.  Paul has won many awards over the years, with Golden Sands winning Champion Best Bitter of Britain at CAMRA Great British Beer festival in 2009.

“Together with head brewer, Paul Crawford, Southport Brewery continues to provide local beers throughout our local area and we are now thrilled to further develop our working relationship with this latest initiative.

“The new SFC IPA is a handcrafted traditional beer that is brewed using the finest Maris Otter Malt (the ‘Rolls Royce’ of malts for the traditional brewer) blended with a selection of Northern Brewer, Cascade and Pioneer hops.  The bespoke design for the 500ml bottles pays homage to a Southport legend with an illustration on the front of the late great Billy Bingham.

“SFC IPA will be on sale at Saturday’s home game against Farsley Celtic in all bars in the ground – why not take the opportunity to tickle your tastebuds and let us know what you think.”
