A Southport couple are celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary this Thursday (19th March 2026) after 60 happy years together.
Alan and Linda Maxwell have already received one very special anniversary card – from King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
The couple grew up in Liverpool and then moved to Southport when they got married in 1966, the year when England won the World Cup.
Alan and Linda married at St David’s Church in Childwall in south Liverpool on 19th March 1966 and then moved to Southport.
They had previously planned to elope aged 16 and 18 and then live in the area near Alan’s brother and sister-in-law but at the last minute they decided to tell their family and instead got married with their family’s blessing aged 18 and 20.
They had already planned their Southport move and moved into the area as newlyweds and never left.
They are very involved with their great grandchildren.
The couple have two children; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Their proud son Stuart said: “I can’t believe my parents have been married this long!
“They are both crazy but the love they have for each other and family is what has made their marriage last.”
Linda and Alan Maxwell enjoyed their 50th wedding anniversary in Prague in the Czech Republic.
Linda worked as a dental nurse in Liverpool – her patients included The Beatles!
She later became a school dinner lady and then carried out market research.
Alan was once the Liverpool Schoolboys Champion Boxer with his exploits being featured in the Liverpool ECHO when he was younger.
He worked as an electrician until his retirement.
Alan hailed from Walton Vale while Linda grew up in Wavertree.
