A number of trees have been damaged by Storm Eunice and Storm Franklin, including this one at Botanic Gardens in Churchtown in Southiort

Some school closures may happen in Southport today as Storm Franklin continues to cause damage.

Further disruption is also expected, with Botanic Gardens in Churchtown continuing to be closed due to fears over falling trees and branches.

Churchtown primary School remains open, with parents and carers asked to use the Sunny Road entrance.

Rail disruption continued to affect Merseyrail services on the Southport to Liverpool Northern Rail line this morning. People are being urged to check before they travel.

Sefton Council issued a statement this morning saying: “With poor weather overnight and into this morning, some services may be disrupted today.

“If you’re a parent or carer then your school will contact you directly to let you know of any closures or changes to timetables.”

Last night saw chaos between Southport and Liverpool, after gale force winds from Storm Franklin – the third storm to hit the area this week – tore down a tree onto the Northern Rail railway line, blocking the line between Ainsdale and Freshfield.

It meant the cancellation of a number of services, which then had to start and terminate at Formby.

Merseyrail put a rail replacement bus service into operation.

Unfortunately that also now metwith delays too, due to trees being brought down in Ince Blundell.

A Sefton Council spokesperson said: “Churchtown Primary School is OPEN today; however due to the closure of Botanic Gardens, only the Sunny Road entrance to the school will be accessible.

“This is due to high winds and potentially weakened trees from Storm Franklin and Storm Eunice.”
