Tap and Bottles in Cambridge Arcade in Southport

Guest Blog by Neville Grundy, Southport & West Lancs Campaign for Real Ale

The CAMRA Good Beer Guide (GBG) will be published this November but is available now to pre-order. This guide is compiled by members of the Campaign for Real Ale and, unlike some other beer guides, pubs cannot pay to be listed.

Instead, places are awarded in the GBG on the basis of recommendations by thousands of CAMRA volunteers across the UK. Every pub or bar listed has been carefully selected by unpaid but knowledgeable volunteers who have visited every one and tasted their beers. These enthusiasts understand what makes a great pint of beer and which venues serve it best.

In the GBG, you’ll find over 4500 of the UK’s best pubs and bars or you can check out the special brewery section to learn about new breweries and their innovative new brews.

Finding a decent pub isn’t always easy – as well as the beer, atmosphere and location are important. The GBG isn’t the biggest UK pub directory, but it is the best-selling beer and pub guide simply because our listings are chosen by volunteers who visit pubs and rate them on their atmosphere, quality of beer and how well they cater for real ale drinkers.

The guide is available from bookshops or online from: shop1.camra.org.uk.

► The Good Beer Guide app. You can have thousands of pubs, beers and breweries at your fingertips with CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide app, which compiles data from over 37,000 real ale licensed premises, over 13,000 beers and 2,000 breweries. The data is collected and maintained by CAMRA members and is powered by WhatPub, CAMRA’s online pub database.

We then sync this data into the latest edition of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide app so that you have the latest and greatest listings at your fingertips. You can get it from Google Play or the App Store through the CAMRA national website, camra.org.uk.

► Please note: the Good Beer Guide is truly independent: pubs do not pay to be included. Any pub licensee who is asked to pay for an entry should firmly show the scammer the door – do not part with any money, and please tell CAMRA via the contact details on our local website, www.southport.camra.org.uk
