Tens of thousands of small businesses will finally receive insurance payouts after a ruling by the Supreme Court.
Judges have found in favour of business owners who were initially denied payments as a result of the first national Covid-19 lockdown in March.
The ruling could be a lifeline for thousands of business owners but is set to cost the insurance industry hundreds of millions of pounds.
During the first Coronavirus lockdown, many small businesses made claims through business Interruption Insurance Policies for loss of earnings when they were forced to close due to the onset of the pandemic.
But many insurers refused to pay, arguing only the most specialist policies had cover for such unprecedented restrictions.
It was agreed that a selection of policy wordings should be tested in court, setting the parameters for what would be considered a valid claim.
The ruling provides guidance for a wider pool of 700 policies, potentially affecting 370,000 small businesses.
