Lots of people in Southport have been asking – ‘just what is that huge building that’s being constructed next to the Tesco supermarket in Kew’?

Builders have been hard at work recently creating the huge structure on a parcel of land off Southport Road.

The site will be used for a new self-storage facility and offices, after planning permission was granted by Sefton Council.

It is aimed at local residents or business owners who require additional storage space.

Storage (Midlands) Ltd is behind the large four-storey building.

The firm believes it will bring investment and development into Southport, create jobs and provide business opportunities for local people.

In its application to the council, Senior Architectural Technologist Ashley Glen from C4 Projects said: “The proposed development would make efficient and effective use of the site providing a self-storage facility and office offerings to the surrounding area, providing jobs and business opportunities for smaller businesses such as start-ups etc and also providing redevelopment to the local area.

“The building use class is fitting for its location. Parking for the development is over the required parking standards.”

The 2.3 acre site is on land on the outskirts of Southport.

The proposed development will produce a “modern and functional building” in terms of layout, scale and appearance.

The scheme will also provide car parking for 65 vehicles, pedestrian access paths and cycle storage. Access will be via Southport Road.

There would be three permanent staff at any one time.

Operational hours when the reception is manned will be: 8am-6pm, seven days a week.

24 hour access is limited for the site, and only so clients can access their belongings at any time they require.

The building will be made up of multiple small rooms (storage units) ranging in size from 35sq ft to 350sq ft.

Senior Architectural Technologist Ashley Glen said: “Customers vary and are predominantly home and small business users who require additional space around the home or business.”

The planning application was submitted in August 2021 with planning approval granted by Sefton Council in September 2022.

In his report, Sefton Council Chief Planning Officer Derek McKenzie said: “There is an evidence base to indicate a number of vacancies within Southport Town Centre that could accommodate an office use.

“In the absence of any harm to the character of the area, to neighbouring living conditions and to the vitality and viability of Southport Town Centre it is considered that the proposal complies with the Local Plan and all other material considerations.”
