A remarkable 13-year-old racing driver from Southport is swiftly rising to prominence in the competitive world of karting.

Despite starting his karting journey just two years ago, Lewis has already achieved notable milestones and is capturing the attention of many racing enthusiasts.

In 2021, the Birkdale High School pupil secured an impressive victory in the Liverpool Cadet final of the British Indoor Karting Championship.

Building on that success, he continued to excel in the 2022 edition of the same competition, achieving a win in the Liverpool local final and securing a podium position at the regional final in Sheffield. His outstanding performance led him to finish an admirable 10th out of 1,700 junior entrants in the national final.

Transitioning to outdoor karting last year, Lewis joined Club100 in the Super-Cadet class. His consistent presence at the front of the pack and setting fastest laps at prominent karting venues have showcased his natural talent and dedication.

Currently, Lewis is competing in the Hooton Park Indikart + series, where he has recently achieved back-to-back podium finishes. Despite being new to the Owner-Driver Junior Rotax class, he secured an impressive P2 in the most recent race and a commendable P3 in the race prior.

The Indikart+ Series is aired on freeview channel SportyStuffTV via TDi Media (also on YouTube). You can also find videos going right back to the start of Lewis’ motorsport journey on our channel, @sumnerspeed

Recognising his exceptional promise, Lewis, who lives with Mum and Dad Paula and Andy Sumner in Birkdale, has been offered a coveted spot on the young driver programme of Arden motorsport.

This esteemed programme has a track record of nurturing talents and providing opportunities for junior formula and GT drivers, nurturing the careers of F1 greats such as Carlos Sainz Jr, Oscar Piastri, and Formula E driver Bruno Senna.

To help him reach the next level, his family is now appealing for sponsorship from local businesses.

Lewis was at the Birkdale Village Fayre on Sunday holding a raffle  to raise money and eager to gain support to fulfil his dreams.

Dad Andy Sumner said: “Despite the remarkable achievements, Lewis and his family are facing the challenges of limited resources.

“While we are grateful for the support received from independent businesses, we are now seeking sponsors to enable Lewis to compete on par with drivers and teams who possess greater financial backing.

“We invite you to meet Lewis Sumner where he will share his journey, ambitions, and the impact sponsors can have on realising his full potential in the motorsport world.

“We believe that Lewis’s passion and dedication, combined with your support, will help propel him to even greater heights in his racing career.”
