Pearl of Africa Children's Choir

There are many ways to celebrate and learn during Black History Month which takes place every October.

Southport Against Racism and Discrimination has organised several successful events showcasing local speakers, writers and singers, but this year is doing something a little different.

On Thursday 5th October 2023 the group has the pleasure of hosting the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir at the Southport Market Extravaganza space.

People are invited to arrive at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

The event is free to attend, with donations sought.

The Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir is made up of students and teachers who fly to the UK each autumn with the aim of raising awareness and money for The Molly and Paul Childcare Foundation Schools

The Molly and Paul Childcare Foundation was founded by two teachers, named Molly and Paul.  They trained in the 1970s and have opened primary and secondary schools in and around Kampala, Uganda. The schools provide support and education for many families and create more chances for families to thrive.

These schools are reliable almost entirely on donations to continue and one way that they raise money is via the Children’s Choir.  During the course of their tour, the choir works with schools and communities to spread the word about the good work, and share their culture.  This inspires donations and donors can see the benefits.

Unfortunately, the choir has had to take a three year break due to the pandemic so funds are needed now more than ever.  Furthermore, the impact of the pandemic has meant some children have not yet returned to school, but progress is being made.  The choir is delighted to be back on the road for 2023.

The 12 strong team made up of 9 youngsters and 3 teachers touched down in Heathrow last week (19th September).  The tour is already underway, taking in the North East then North Yorkshire before coming to the North West on Thursday 5th October.

Other opportunities to see this talented group perform in Southport include at The Family Life Centre on Saturday 14th October, and Linaker Primary School on Monday 16th October.

The choir then moves on to Shropshire, Cornwall and the Isle of Wight before returning home.

Further tour dates are available online.

In addition to an incredible musical performance, the team will be bringing a stall with information and crafts to purchase; another empowering way to raise vital funds.

Southport Against Racism and Discrimination has organised this booking and is very grateful to Fletchers Group in Southport for its generous donation which has meant securing this wonderful opportunity for our welcoming and inclusive town.

If you cannot attend any of the dates this year, but you would like to make a donation, you can do so here.
