A midwife at Ormskirk Hospital who has been called a “true angel’’ has been honoured by Stand Up For Southport readers.

Jo Unsworth, a specialist bereavement midwife won the Stand Up For Southport People’s Choice Award at the first Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust staff awards at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena.

The award, which sees readers nominate their NHS heroes, was presented to Jo by Andrew Brown from Stand Up For Southport and well-known ITV Granada News Reporter Paul Crone.

Jo was praised for her amazing efforts to care for parents following the loss of a baby with families saying: “she is a true angel that helps them to grieve, rebuild and prepare for the future.’’

She was also said to show a “unique combination of compassion and understanding while having the ability to listen to what parents and the family’s needs truly are.’’

Jo, who qualified as a midwife in 2006, said she was “proud’’ to receive the award.

Ormskirk Hospital Specialist Bereavement Midwife Jo Unsworth said:

“Any award is nice to receive but to get one that is voted for by members of the community like this is extra special.

“To be able to help people at a real time of need is a privilege and I feel very proud to have been recognised for what I do alongside other members of a great team.’’

More than 1,200 members of staff gathered together, alongside a host of famous faces, to recognise the enormous difference our NHS heroes have made to the lives of their many patients and the local community over the last year, and the hard work and commitment they continue to show each and every day.

The Community Wheelchair Service and the Spiritual care and Chaplaincy Team at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals were honoured as Finalists and were praised by readers for their support for local patients.
