A Motor Claims Handler from United Legal Assistance in Southport is driving support for Queenscourt Hospice, after signing up to take part in the Jail and Bail fundraiser.

Jocelyn Pye is looking forward to taking part in the fun initiative, which will see a dozen kind-hearted people ‘sentenced’ for their ‘crimes’ at the former Southport Magistrates Court (now Access Point); ‘jailed’ and then set a series of fun challenges to raise a minimum of £999 ‘bail’ money before they are released.

Every penny raised will go towards supporting the ongoing work of Queenscourt Hospice, in a fundraiser organised by Queenscourt Hospice and by Stand Up For Southport.

Jocelyn enjoys working as a Motor Claims Handler at United Legal Assistance, which moved into stylish new offices on Lord Street in Southport town centre last year.

She has been part of the Uninsured Loss Recovery Team there since 6th February.

Jocelyn Pye said: “I really enjoy working here! It’s a fantastic team and it’s in such a great location. I love being able to walk along Lord Street and into the office.

“Everyone has been so lovely since I started here. They have been very welcoming.

“If you do well at something, then people around you make you feel proud. I am loving my job!

“It is great coming into work.

“People say that if you love your job, then you will never work a day in your life.

“I work Monday to Friday at United Legal Assistance, and also work part-time during weekends at the Southport Coaster pub on Lord Street.”

Queenscourt Hospice is a cause that Jocelyn loves to raise money for.

She said: “It is a superb local charity. There are so many national charities that get lots of money, but I think Queenscourt is such a worthy cause to support.

“It is so important that people do what they can to contribute to keep them operating when they do such amazing work in our community.”

Jocelyn will be hoping for support from across the local community.

She has lived in Southport since she was 15 years old having been born in Swindon.

In her younger days, she also lived in places including Germany, Norfolk, Lincoln and Huntingdon.

Her Dad went to Farnborough Road Junior School in Birkdale, and she was proud that her children, Adam Sankey and Nathan Sankey, then attended the same school.

Her mum attended Birkdale High School in the days when it was a mixed school.

Jocelyn said: “The Farnborough Road Headteacher, Mr Adrian Antell, is fantastic. He took part in Jail and Bail last year.

“When my son Nathan left school each day he would always shake Mr Antell’s hand on the way home. It was such a lovely school. I loved my children being there.

“Before United Legal Assistance, I spent 25 years working for EEC Home Improvements in Southport, and have also worked at Jewson Southport, Lord Street Hotel and Punch Tarmey’s pub in Southport. The Manager there, Trinity, is lovely. I love going back in there to see them all.

“I am getting lots of backing from people for Jail and Bail already.

“But some of them are asking if they can pay to keep me in!

“Jail and Bail sounds like a lot of fun. I will give anything a go!

“I am quite outgoing so this sounds perfect.

“My Dad was in the RAF so we were moving all the time while growing up. You have to learn how to be outgoing and friendly with people.”

Her family have been busy preparing the ‘crimes’ for her rap sheet.

Jocelyn said: “For my crimes, my children would probably say losing stuff! Either that, or visiting the pub. But when you spend your life working in them, it’s hard not to.”

Every penny raised through Jail & Bail will go towards Queenscourt Hospice, which provides care and support for residents across West Lancashire, Southport and Formby, 365 days a year.

Queenscourt is staging this fundraiser in collaboration with Stand Up For Southport 10am-3pm on Friday, 7th June 2024 at Access Point, based inside the former Southport Magistrates’ Court building, on Albert Road in Southport.

A handful of other local ‘criminals’ have already had their collars felt – organisers are looking forward to bringing them together in June as a ‘chain gang’.

Several local businesses are supporting the initiative on the day.

Queenscourt Hospice Fundraising Manager Liz Hartley said:

“We’re thrilled to join forces with Andrew and the Stand Up For Southport team for this year’s Jail and Bail event. This quirky event isn’t just about fun and entertainment—it’s a testament to our community’s generosity and spirit. Together, our ‘inmates’ are raising vital funds to help us to provide compassionate care to those who need us most. We’re looking forward to laughter, camaraderie, and making a real difference where it counts.”

Stand up For Southport owner Andrew Brown said:

“We are honoured to team up with Queenscourt Hospice to launch the second Jail & Bail fundraiser!

“It’s going to be a really fun way of raising money for an incredible local charity that holds a very special place in the hearts of so many of us.”

Queenscourt Hospice provides access to specialist palliative care either at home (including care homes), hospital or in Queenscourt via the Inpatient Unit or as an Outpatient.
