The new events space at the new look Southport Market is due to be completed this October.

People will be able to enjoy a large range of events including food and drink festivals, comedy nights, cabaret, immersive events, themed markets, tasting events, Christmas events and much more. Local community groups will also be able to utilise it.

Sefton Council, which is leading the scheme, believes it will encourage more visitors into Southport town centre and attract more private investment into the growing ‘Market Quarter’ of town.

The Southport Makers Market, which takes place outside the Market on the first Sunday of every month, has proved to be so successful that it is due to expand from next month.

A new Events and Sales Officer is due to start work this October to help to develop more indoor and outdoor markets.

Southport Market has proved to be a huge success since it opened in July following its £1.4million transformation into a brand new food, drink and events venue. The redevelopment was led by Sefton Council with £900,000 funding from Southport Town Deal and £500,000 through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

More than 10,000 excited and hungry customers passed through the doors of the brand new Southport Market in its first 48 hours of opening. There is currently a waiting list for new traders.

“There are more plans for the market, and this will continue to be implemented in a phased approach that will bring more added benefits,” said Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills Councillor Atkinson in reply to a question at the full Sefton Council meeting.

“The events space is due to be completed in October, bringing more footfall to both the Market and the surrounding area.

“Again it is hoped this will not only generate extra footfall for the existing businesses but act as a reason for more private sector investment into the area and Southport Town Centre.”

The new events space will be able to host a number of new things which will attract thousands of new visitors.

Cllr Marion Atkinson said: “The events space is an integral part of The Market and key to the overall business case. When complete in the next few weeks the events space will be capable of holding a large range of events including food and drink festivals, comedy nights, cabaret, immersive events, themed markets, tasting events, Christmas events and much more.

“It is also the plan to allow community groups to use the space for events such as dance classes, book groups, fitness groups, art classes and choirs.

“All these uses will further support The Market becoming a hub for Southport Town Centre.”
