Plans have been submitted for a new rollercoaster at Southport Pleasureland

Southport people are thrilled at plans to create a spectacular new roller coaster along the seafront in the resort.

Supreme Attractions owner Norman Wallis, who owns Southport Pleasureland, has submitted plans to build the stunning 35 metre high ‘Thunderbolt’ ride would be built right along Marine Drive coast road, becoming a dominant new landmark that can be seen for miles by people living along the Lancashire coast and beyond.

The new roller coaster would boast “spectacular views” along the coast and would take people on bends and loops at speeds of up to 90 kilometres per hour.

Local people can’t wait for Southport’s newest attraction to arrive.

Speaking in the Stand Up For Southport Facebook group, Carolyn Beeston said: “Now we’re talking! Come on Norman Wallis, build it! We’re missing a good coaster in this town.”

Linda Humphreys said: “For once I agree, that is where the potential for regeneration can start.”

Tayler Spruce said: “It will be truly fantastic to see a coaster rise once again above Marine Drive – something we haven’t seen since the removal of Traumatizer in 2006!”

Paula Graham said: “This would be an amazing attraction!”

Michael Anderson said: “About time there was a decent roller coaster!”

Sarah Boyer said: “Think it’s a great idea and Norman Wallis should be commended for the money he has invested in reopening and improving Southport Pleasureland.”

Mel Jones said: “The owner of Pleasureland is a real gem, he’s making Southport a great place to visit especially families. Keep up the great work.”

The plans for the new roller coaster have been drawn up by local firm RAL Architects.

In their submission, they said: “The location will allow spectacular views out to the beach to the west and to the east towards Pleasureland, the Marine Lake and Southport town centre.

“Pleasureland Amusement Park has been contributing significantly to Southport’s reputation and leisure offer since 1913 and brings more visitors to Southport than any other leisure offer.

“This new ride will enhance the offer and improve the reputation of Pleasureland helping to draw further visitors to the town.”
