A new village bakery and deli is due to be created in Birkdale Village in Southport on the site of the former Dutch Bakery.

Samuels And Co The Village Pantry would open as “a new and sustainable independent business” at 35C Liverpool Road in Birkdale Village if plans are approved.

Owners have submitted a planning application to Sefton Council for a change of use from a hot food takeaway to a coffee shop / cafe with the sale of alcohol, alterations to the ground floor windows and the provision of an outdoor seating area.

In the submission to the council on behalf of the applicant, Clayton Architecture said the new  village bakery / deli with indoor and outdoor seating provision would be a positive asset to the Village.

They said: “The building currently has permission as a bakery however the proposal would also like to include a small level of on-site consumption and a select range of bottled alcohol.

“The applicant is a local business owner and investor and therefore has the best interests for both the site in question and the surrounding area

“Within the changes to the building as part of the proposed works, the building frontage is not changing apart from the change in signage and window.

“The signage has been designed in a way to be in-keeping with the nearby surroundings and has a neutral colour palette which will improve the aesthetics of the property frontage as the current signage is bright orange in colour. As such there will be no detrimental impact to the Conservation Area.

“The application includes the addition of an outdoor seating area. There are several bars and restaurants within 100m of the site that have external seating areas and therefore the use of external seating would not differ from the norm within the surrounding area.

“Other changes to the exterior include reinstating the original windows of the building to allow natural light to enter the interior from the street. Also introducing external lighting to the façade to increase visibility in the evenings which will also benefit the neighbouring properties.

“This submission supports the addition of a new and sustainable independent business on an established high street. It would also have several positive impacts on the surrounding community, businesses, and homeowners.”
