Sefton Council Cabinet Member for Children's Social Care Cllr Mhairi Doyle

A Southport councillor has been promoted to join Sefton Council’s Cabinet.

Cllr Mhairi Doyle MBE, who represents Norwood Ward in Southport, has been appointed as the new Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care.

The Labour politician is one of 10 councillors in the Cabinet, and the only one from North Sefton.

Cllr Doyle has lived in Southport since 1988, having moved here from Edinburgh where she was born and brought up. She joined the Labour party after retiring  from the Civil Service.

Until she retired in 2012,  Cllr Doyle worked for the Department of Work and Pensions, where she was Social Inclusion Manager for Merseyside. She has vast experience in dealing with vulnerable people and disadvantaged clients and worked at local, regional and national levels developing policy to help change lives.

She has become a trustee and board member of homelessness organisations, such as Bosco House in Bootle and New Start Homes, and also the Spider Project, which works with people in recovery from substance misuse or mental health issues.

She was heavily involved in setting up the Sefton Supported Housing Group (SSHG) consortium which successfully bid for the single homeless contract with Sefton Council.

Cllr Doyle was awarded her MBE for services to social inclusion in the New Year’s Honours List in 2013. On May 3rd 2018 she became Councillor for Norwood Ward.

Now she has joined Sefton’s Cabinet, she has stepped down from her role as Chair of Southport Labour Party, a role she has enjoyed for the past five years.

All elected since 2018, Southport Labour Party now boasts seven councillors in the town.

Cllr Doyle says she is ‘very proud’ of the record during her period as Chair.

She said: “Having seen how our council stepped up to help residents during the pandemic, I hope that our success will long continue here so that we can help put Southport back on its feet post-pandemic and look after our town and community.

“Now though feels the right time for me to step down as Chair as I have just been appointed to Sefton’s Cabinet with the Children’s Social Care portfolio.

“It’s a huge brief and a huge privilege to be trusted with this and so I want to give it my all, along with my ward duties in Norwood Ward of course.”

The Cabinet is the part of the Council which is responsible for most of the day-to-day decisions. The Cabinet is made up of the Leader of the Council and other Councillors appointed by the Leader.

The Cabinet has to make decisions which are in line with the Council’s overall policies and budget. If it wishes to make a decision which is outside the budget or policy framework, this must be referred to the Council as a whole to decide.

Individual Members of the Cabinet make decisions on service issues within their area of responsibility (portfolio) under delegated powers.
