Southport’s restaurants and takeaways have won dozens of awards between them over the years, and it’s easy to see why!
Here are the top 10 chippies in Southport, rated by diners on TripAdvisor.
These reviews are of course subjective! It’s all about opinions, which will always differ, so this feature is for entertainment rather than fact.
What is important is that Southport boasts some amazing fish and chip shops – we are lucky to have them!

10 – High Park Fish and Chips, 122 Bispham Road, High Park, Southport
Family favourite fish and chips with Chinese meals in High Park.
The owners raised hundreds of pounds for the NHS during their Super Hero Sunday events during the coronavirus lockdown.
One reviewer said: “This chippy is great. They deliver to your door! We always have the chicken curry, gosh what a portion, it feeds two people easily. The crispy duck and pancakes is lovely very juicy! Cannot fault it in any way at all.”
9 – The Dolphin Restaurant, 30/34 Scarisbrick Avenue, Southport
Three generations of the Handley family have been serving the area’s award winning Fish & Chips since 1957.
One reviewer said: “Visited here today, party off 4 plus 1 pet dog, all made welcome, food and service excellent, will be back, BRILLIANT SERVICE.”

You can usually spot Mr Chips by the regular queues during an evening! Hugely popular with local residents in the Churchtown and surrounding areas.
One reviewer said: “Great fish and chip shop that for me outstrips local rivals. All cooked fresh which does mean a wait but it’s worth it. Huge portions so we generally go for small fish and chips which is more than enough.”

A local fish and chip shop located in the heart of Ainsdale, Southport. British Chippy is a family run fish and chip shop that offers a relaxed setting in its restaurant for customers to enjoy its fish and chips. Located just next door is the British Chippy takeaway.
One reviewer said: “Fish and chips to die for – can’t get better than that. Cod in a light batter that looks as good as it tastes – great any night for a filling meal!!”
6 – Fylde Fish Bar, 39 Weld Road Birkdale, Southport
Fylde Fish Bar, owned by the Zeniou family, began life in Marshside. But their award winning success has since seen them open new branches in Birkdale and Burscough.
One reviewer said: “Great quality fish and chips from here, also an excellent menu. A really good meal is the steak pie meal. Proper chips. This chip shop is very clean and the staff are very friendly.”
5 – The Sandgrounder, 60-62 Nevill Street, Southport
A taste of the seaside. The Sandgrounder is opposite the entrance to Southport Pier, and right next to the town’s statue of Queen Victoria. The perfect seaside location with great fish and chips.
One reviewer said: “A wholeheartedly positive recommendation – but especially for the chips which are the best I have ever tasted – anywhere! The battered cod was extremely good, and my kids were enthusiastic about the sausage and curry sauce. Overall, along with a friendly welcome, this is the only fish and chip shop you need to visit. Totally deserving of the 5* hygiene and quality awards they’ve got!”
4 – The Busy Bee, 567 Liverpool Road, Ainsdale, Southport
Established in 1985, offering traditional Fish and Chips and Chinese meals to takeaway. A family run business.
One reviewer said: “Been coming here for years and I will still say that this is the best fish and chips I have EVER had. Every time I eat somewhere new, I always find myself comparing it to the Busy Bee’s. This is by far the best I have ever eaten.”
3 – The Fryery, 12 Guildford Road, Birkdale, Southport
Six years ago, The Fryery was closed for a year after a car ploughed through the front of the building in the early hours of the morning.
For people living nearby, the repairs to get this local favourite back up and running again were well worth the wait.
One reviewer said: “Always come here on Friday evenings for fish & Chips with smooth curry sauce. It’s always excellent. Love the spam fritter too!! Highly recommended.”

A firm favourite among generations of Sandgrounders.
Masterchef judge Marcus Wareing, who filmed here a few years ago, is among famous fans of The Swan’s golden fish and chips.
One reviewer said: “Visited Southport today, decided to try here as I had heard really good reviews on here, the food was amazing, definitely worth sampling the best fish and chips in the area, brilliant value for money and welcoming friendly staff. Manager was lovely. These ladies do an amazing job well done!”

They teamed up with MD Travel during the coronavirus lockdown to deliver meals to customers.
One reviewer said: “What can I say, but amazing food as always and even during lockdown we have had food delivered and it is the same exceptional quality as you get in the restaurant. Delivered hot and on time with MD Travel.”
