Southport TV chef Jemma Melvin can’t wait to show off her recipes at this year’s Southport Flower Show – and is preparing to unveil a very special dish for visitors to try.
This time last year, Jemma was overjoyed at winning BBC One programme – The Jubilee Pudding: 70 Years in the Baking.
Jemma’s dish was one of the stars of the show as Queen Elizabeth II celebrated 70 years on the throne through her Platinum Jubilee.
Judges included TV cookery presenter Dame Mary Berry, Masterchef judge Monica Galetti and a surprise guest, Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall.
Jemma’s winning entry was a sensational seven-layered, citrus-packed Lemon Swiss Roll and Amaretti Trifle. She was one of five finalists selected for the programme after more than 5,000 people from across the UK sent in their recipes.
Her show-stopping dessert featured: a lemon curd swiss roll on the bottom; St Clement’s jelly; lemon custard; amaretti biscuits; mandarin orange coulis; fresh whipped cream; candied peel chocolate shards; and amaretti crushed biscuits.

Jemma’s last 12 months have been a whirlwind of TV and radio appearances, and demonstrations at food and drink festivals throughout the UK and around the world.
Now she can’t wait to star in the Cookery Theatre at Southport Flower Show on Thursday 17th August 2023.
Other celebrity chefs appearing at this year’s event include: John Torode MBE, Lisa Faulkner, Phil Vickery, Lizzie Acker and Gabriella Margiotta.
Jemma Melvin said: “I am really looking forward to appearing at Southport Flower Show this summer!
“I did two demonstrations at last year’s Show, and they were both full, they were packed out.
“I grew up in Southport and have enjoyed going to see Southport Flower Show.

“I think the event has developed so much over the years.
“There is so much for people to do! The gardening and floral side is really strong, but now you have all the top chefs and cookery demonstrations, lots of entertainment, celebrities, dog agility shows, children’s entertainment and more., Southport Flower Show is a really great day out.
“I love seeing all the different Flower Show guests who you wouldn’t otherwise get to see in Southport, I love seeing all the show gardens, and all the massive veg!
“I did demonstrations last year and my family came along to the event as well. I enjoyed going to Ladies Day on the Friday too.”
The good news for visitors to the event is that Jemma is preparing a very special surprise for Southport Flower Show – but they will have to be there to see what it is!
She did give one small hint about what people can expect.
Jemma said: “I will be creating something very special just for Southport Flower Show, but I can’t say exactly what it is going to be just yet!
“But it is definitely going to be flower related – it will also be something that people will be able to go away and make for themselves at home as well as not being too expensive to make.
“I loved doing the demonstrations at the Flower Show last year. Lots of people there had seen Platinum Pudding and were showing me pictures of my trifle which they had made at home!

“It was really lovely to see!”
It’s hard to believe it’s just one year since Jemma triumphed in The Jubilee Pudding: 70 Years in the Baking.
It has been a whirlwind year for her since that day, and the list of what she has achieved since then has been breathtaking.
Jemma is now a regular contributor on BBC’s Morning Live.
Other TV and radio shows she has appeared on include: BBC Breakfast, This Morning, Good Morning Britain, The One Show (including a special film with Mary Berry and Alex Jones), Good Morning America, NBC Today, TF1 France, BBC Radio 2 with Rob Beckett, Heart Radio with Amanda Holden, and Gogglebox!
Her pudding sold out every day it went on sale at Fortnum & Mason.
It was served at Chelsea Flower Show, Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and was demoed at food and drink festivals up and down the country.
Jemma also created a special recipe to celebrate last year’s Macmillan’s Coffee Morning.

She said: “It’s been a year since The Jubilee Pudding: 70 Years in the Baking aired and my little lemon trifle was declared the official pud of our late Queen’s Jubilee celebrations… and it all went a bit mad!
“My whole life turned upside down. It has been unbelievable ever since! I didn’t think a career in TV was ever possible.
“People often say in situations like that, that they don’t expect all this to happen, but I really didn’t.
“Being involved in Queen Elizabeth II’s final celebrations, her Platinum Jubilee, was an honour I will never forget.
“It has been amazing, I am just so lucky that everyone in Southport got right behind me.

“We all watched the programme together in London, went to the Fortnum and Mason Awards where the pud was first served, partied until 3am and then I got up at 4.30am to get ready for the craziest day of my life, starting with breakfast TV! Sleep could wait!

Southport Flower Show has a superb line-up this year.

Southport Flower Show is a registered charity (charity number 1000698) and the largest independent flower show in the country attracting over 55,000 visitors across four days.
Early bird tickets are on sale for £23 until the end of May. Children under 16 go free.
