Southport became a winter wonderland this morning as snow blanketed the town.

Scores of people posted stunning pictures of snow scenes across the town into the Stand Up For Southport.

The frosty start to the day, which coincided with this week’s Met office Weather Warning for Snow and Ice, quickly melted away.

But it causes some travel disruption for people travelling to work.

Merseyrail services started later than usual as staff worked to get the tracks in working order and there were delays and breakdowns on some services.

Local bus services also saw some disruption, partly caused by heavier snowfall in parts of Liverpool.

Schools in Southport remained open, although there were some school closures elsewhere in the North West.

The Met Office is now predicting that Southport and the rest of Merseyside could see some more snow on Wednesday.

The Met Office Weather Warning remains in place for Southport and beyond until 11.59pm on Thursday, January 18.

People are being warned travel is likely to be disrupted throughout its duration.

Wednesday’s Met Office forecast for Southport reads: “Frosty with icy surfaces at first, then a crisp winter’s day with plenty of sunshine. Staying generally dry but a rogue light snow flurry couldn’t be entirely ruled out. Cold.”

A Merseyrail spokesperson said: “We do everything possible to avoid cancelling services, but when the predicted weather conditions require it, we have to take appropriate steps to make sure the network can continue to operate safely.

“Passengers should check for the latest updates before heading to the station in the morning.”
