One of the North West’s most historic nightspots has been transformed through a £600,000 investment – after it was nearly lost and converted into flats.
The Fox & Goose pub in Southport town centre has been visited by generations of people enjoying nights out ever since it first opened in the 1850s.
Successful local businessman Hasan Akdeniz has now led its conversion into an exciting new venue which can be enjoyed both during daytime and night-time, with lots of different rooms for people to explore, both inside and outside.
These pictures show how the ground floor has been turned into a superb new night-time venue with the town’s most colourful, neon-squared dancefloor, while live music is back. A feature bar runs alongside the left hand side of the wall, and VIP rooms can be hired.

The popular Saturday night rock nights have returned at the venue, on Cable Street, just off Lord Street, right at the heart of the town centre.
The Fox & Goose has always been famous for its live music, and local bands have returned to the venue over the past few weeks.
Keen to embrace the whole of the Southport community, the Fox & Goose has begun to host brand new Romanian nights and Russian nights, which have proved to be very popular.
Hasan has created an attractive new outside beer garden area where visitors can relax and enjoy the town’s first ever shisha bar.

People of all ages will love the new-look first floor, which has been converted by Hasan into brand new Games Rooms.
Here people can find a new pool table, a dart board, and will soon be able to play on a table tennis table.
Local firm Classic Arcade Games has provided several nostalgia arcade games for people to enjoy. More is set to follow.
The Fox & Goose has created an atmosphere and facilities available for people of all ages at all times of day and night.
Hasan said: “We opened the Fox & Goose on 2nd July, following an investment of around £600,000.
“I applied for a licence to bring back the Fox & Goose. Planning permission had been granted to the previous owner to convert the building into eight apartments when I bought it.
“I am aware of the huge affection that people locally have for the Fox & Goose so I was determined to reopen it, but to give it a really good new look at the same time.

“Everyone in Southport has really good memories of being here.
“You can’t imagine how many emails and messages I had from people when they heard I was reopening the Fox & Goose. They were delighted to hear that we were back.
“I had lots of messages from people who had met their husbands or wives in here, who had celebrated their 18th birthdays in here, people who have enjoyed great nights out over the years.
“I would like to add a big thank you to my business partner Dr. Emrah Aslan for all his help and support with this project and Mr. Adem Akdeniz too.
Plus, a really big thank you to all local Southport residents who supported me throughout.”

Hasan knows Southport very well, having run a number of successful nearby businesses.
He believes in the town’s future, and has more plans for investment.
He said: “I have been doing business in Southport for the past 14 years.
“There is nothing here that is similar to what we have here at the Fox & Goose.
“Our new Games Room is really unique. People aged between 21 and 35 don’t have a great choice of where to go during the day to relax and enjoy themselves.

“Here they can come and play pool, play darts, enjoy our classic arcade games, or play table tennis. They no longer have to travel outside of town to find something similar.
“There are a few more games on their way here soon as well.
“At the back, on the ground floor, we have our new beer garden and shisha garden. This is one of a kind, the only one like this in Southport.
“In Southport, there’s nowhere to go for the shisha. People I speak to are going to Manchester or Liverpool and they’re having to drive one hour each way and then one person has to drive so can’t drink.
“Here, everyone will be welcome and then you can get a taxi for a few quid because you’re already in Southport.
“Our outside area is open every day, until 10pm, out of respect for our neighbours.”

Before it closed in 2018 the Fox & Goose was well known for its live music, hosting bands such as Space and staging the popular Battle of the Bands contests.
The pub was first opened in the 1850s, and enjoyed trading for many years until it was turned into a ‘fun pub’ called The Pavilion in 1984. The fun included regular custard pie fights!
But the ‘fun’ was short-lived, and in 1987 a ‘pub with a new image and a very different sense of style’ arrived, namely The Steamboat.
Thankfully, under new management ‘The Fox’ made a full recovery and after just seven years the pub reverted back to its original name early in 1991.

Known for showcasing local musical talent, the bar was one of few in the town which championed rock music and featured live acts on a regular basis.
But it closed down three years ago and plans were soon lodged to convert the building into a block of flats, marking the end of one of the town’s most iconic venues.
After one application was rejected, a second was approved and disappointed local residents feared the venue was gone forever.
But it was successfully rescued and given a substantial renovation by Hasan Akdeniz.
People are now being encouraged to come and take a look at what the new venue has to offer.
Guests enjoy a night out at the Fox & Goose pub in Southport
Hasan, who is originally from Turkey, has previously run off-licences, shops and kebab shops in the town, including Southport Food Centre on Nevill Street.
It was through the shop that he first knew of the venue’s popularity and the scores of tributes and online comments after its closure convinced him to take over the venue.
He said: “I used to run the SFC takeaway at the time when the Fox and Goose was open. When it shut down I read the reviews online and Southport people were so upset – one couple met 50 years ago in the Fox and Goose.
“I read more than 300 reviews, everyone was so sad and had good memories of the Fox and Goose.
“When I sat down, people were looking for some businessman to invest and reopen, I said ‘why not?’ I was looking for a second business at the time.
“I hope people will enjoy seeing the Fox & Goose back open again and will come and enjoy what we have to offer.”
