These images show how one of Southport’s most iconic nightspots could look after its transformation.

Plans have been submitted to Sefton Council to redevelop and reopen the legendary Fox & Goose, on Cable Street in Southport town centre.

Local people were dismayed when the venue – famous for its live music – closed its doors two years ago.

It was soon followed by the news that the building was due to be turned into flats.

But now Southport businessman Hasan Akdeniz has taken over the venture, and has revealed exciting plans for its future.

The proposal is to change the existing premises by refurbishment and to extend the ground floor with a covered moveable garden area.

The first floor would also be refurbished.

The proposal has no requirement to change the footprint of the building and seeks to retain the existing character of the building within the area. The frontage of the building onto Cable Street will be unchanged.

Access for the disabled would be provided in the form of level access at the entrance with staff trained in access for people with wheelchair disabilities.

The redeveloped Fox & Goose would add to a number of other exciting new ventures happening in Southport town centre.

They include the conversion of the former BHS building on Chapel Street into shops on the ground floor and apart hotels above, with Techedia creating 75 new jobs with the conversion of the former Taskers Sports building on Corporation Street, and a planned redevelopment of the Southport Market into a food, drink and events hub.

Hasan, who is originally from Turkey, has previously run off licences, shops and kebab shops in the town, including Southport Food Centre on Nevill Street.

It was through the shop that he first knew of the venue’s popularity and the scores of tributes and online comments after its closure convinced him to take over the venue.

He said: “I used to run the SFC takeaway at the time when the Fox and Goose was open. When it shut down I read the reviews online and Southport people were so upset – one couple met 50 years ago in the Fox and Goose.

“I read more than 300 reviews, everyone was so sad and had good memories of the Fox and Goose.

“When I sat down, people were looking for some businessman to invest and reopen, I said ‘why not?’. I was looking for a second business at the time.”

Hasan spoke to a few local people who were excited at the prospect of it reopening before buying the building and has now finalised his plans with designers and architects.

He said: “It’s going to be a variety of things. When you go to the first floor, it’s going to be a nightclub and rock bar.

“The second floor will be like a games room, with pool tables, arcade games and a VIP room which you can rent out.”

Rock music will return to the Fox and Goose on dedicated weekly nights, while there will also be Student Nights and one night a week dedicated to Asian and Eastern European music, offering something unique to the town’s immigrants along with a new experience for those born locally.

Hasan also wants to offer occasional Turkish nights with music and belly dancers, as many visitors to his other businesses told him they enjoyed during holidays.

The shisha bar will be located outside and will be the first of its kind in Southport.

He said: “In Southport, there’s nowhere to go for the shisha. People I speak to are going to Manchester or Liverpool and they’re having to drive one hour each way and then one person has to drive so can’t drink.

“Here, everyone will be welcome and then you can get a taxi for a few quid because you’re already in Southport.”
