Two historic red telephone boxes in Southport have been restored and repurposed to support the community. 

The two phone boxes outside Southport Town Hall and next to Christ Church on Lord Street have been repainted and stocked with items to support local people. 

‘In The Red’ offers free, essential items like socks, toiletries, water, and support leaflets to anyone in need — no questions asked.

Whether you’re struggling, passing by, or looking to help, this is a small space with a big purpose: restoring dignity through practical kindness. 

Run with love by the local community and supported by Anything All Trades Ltd, it’s a beacon of compassion right in the heart of town.

The new facility opened yesterday (Thursday 26th June 2025) and has been well received.

Ryan from In The Red said: “I think this is going to be a well used facility – in the first 12 hours we had eight visitors.

“Donations are very welcome either inside the box, the drop-off location and pre-paid purchases for us to top the box up from our online shop

The first standard public telephone kiosk was introduced by the United Kingdom Post Office in 1921.

Created by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and Battersea Power Station, the red telephone box was in 2006 voted as one of Britain’s top 10 design icons alongside the Supermarine Spitfire, the Mini and the London tube map.
