The site of the new Marine Lake Events Centre in Southport

Roadworks in front of the site for the new Marine Lake Events Centre in Southport are finishing ahead of schedule.

Local Sefton business Dowhigh Limited has been carrying out the work on the Promenade over the past few weeks.

Work is due to end today (Tuesday 16th April 2024), meaning the road will reopen this Wednesday.

It will see a step closer to demolition work beginning on the former Southport Theatre and Convention Centre, ahead of the construction of the brand new £73 million Marine Lake Events Centre, and an adjacent water and light show in the Marine Lake.

The project is being led by Sefton Council and once complete is forecast to attract an additional 515,000 visitors to Southport every year, bringing an estimated £12 million into the local economy annually.

The new MLEC is the central scheme of Southport Town Deal, with £33.3 million funding supported by £20 from Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and £19.9 million in prudential borrowing by Sefton Council.

A Sefton Council spokesperson said: “We are delighted to announce that Sefton Council’s appointed contractor, Dowhigh Limited, who are carrying out the roadworks on the Promenade, are ahead of schedule.

“They have advised us that they will conclude their works, which currently close the Southbound Promenade just over two weeks early.

“Work will conclude today, Tuesday 16th April, and the road will reopen on Wednesday 17th April enabling residents to return to parking on their premises as normal.

“The Northbound carriageway requires some further remedial works which are scheduled to conclude Friday 19th April, but these works will not affect access or parking.

“Thank you so much for your patience, support, and co-operation during these works, it is much appreciated. And hats off to Dowhigh for the brilliant work!”

Owen Lea-Porter from Dowhigh Limited said: “We are working with Sefton Council to ensure we get this work completed as quickly as possible so that the Marine Lake Events Centre building can move on and we can get this old Floral Hall knocked down.

“Then the new developers can get in and start building the new MLEC Centre which is going to be fantastic for Southport and for the Sefton area as a whole.”

ASM Global has been appointed as Sefton Council’s preferred venue operator for the Marine Lake Events Centre.
