Supporters at Southport Football Club raised over £4,000 for local community projects at the weekend.

A crowd of 1,257 were at the Big Help Stadium on Saturday to cheer on the Sandgrounders in their 3-2 win against Buxton, as they also supported Southport Community Day.

The #OneSouthport event saw fans able to pay what they wanted to watch the match, with all the money raised going towards positive projects in the town.

The match happened just over a month after the heartbreaking tragedy at The Hart Space in Southport where three young girls were killed while several other children and adults were badly injured in a horrific knife attack.

Everyone at the ground observed a minute’s silence for the children who had lost their lives and then took part in three minutes’ applause for heroes from our emergency services who gave so much both on that day and in the weeks since.

Guests at the Community Day included: Mayor of Sefton Cllr June Burns; Lord Mayor of Liverpool Cllr Richard Kemp CBE; emergency services representatives from North West Ambulance Service, Merseyside Fire and Rescue and Merseyside Police; the Merseyside Crime Commissioner’s office; Southport Samaritans; Southport MP Patrick Hurley; Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson; and Southport councillor Sean Halsall.

Southport FC Senior Executive Officer Alexandra Molton said: “We showed our appreciation for the emergency services, the Samaritans helping people affected and those impacted by the tragedy by clapping from the 7th – 9th minute during the game.

“We were able to raise £4192.64 from in person and virtual ticket sales on the day which will go towards community projects in Southport. Details of these will be announced in due course.

Southport FC had started the season in fine form, winning their first two league games, but had since lost their next three before Saturday saw them get back to winning ways. They secured another point with a draw against Farsley Celtic last night.
