A fascinating new book celebrates the origins of how rugby and football started in Southport.
Today, we enjoy two thriving sports clubs – Southport FC, based at Haig Avenue, and Southport RFC, at Waterloo Road, which celebrates its 150th season of playing rugby this coming season.
Local author Daniel J. Hayes has now published his new book – The Town’s Game: The Origins of Rugby and Association Football in Southport (1872-1889).
The book has a foreword by renowned local historian Michael Braham, co-author of ‘The Sandgrounders: The Complete League History of Southport FC.
The Town’s Game traces the lineage of Southport Football Club and Southport Rugby Football Club back to the very beginning, and provides a forensic examination of the origins of these sports in the town towards the end of the 19th century.
This book tells the story of a game that began as an unassuming winter pastime for a select few but underwent a fascinating evolution to become Southport’s most popular leisure time activity.
Local Historian David Walshe, who published the Secret Sand Land blog and wrote Sandy Tracks, said: “This book delves into the previously unknown to unearth what really happened. It’s the untold story.
“I think Dan has stumbled upon one of the most important historical links that I, and I am sure everyone else was unaware of. It is a significant discovery.”
The Town’s Game includes results, with line-ups wherever available, for Southport Football Club (Rugby), Southport Olympic (Rugby), Southport Wasps (Rugby), Southport Hornets (Rugby), Southport Football Club (Association Football), Southport Wanderers (Association Football) and Southport Recreation (Association Football), between the years 1872 and 1889.

Southport author Daniel J.Hayes
Daniel J. Hayes became the creator and editor of the first Southport Football Club website in 1996 and held a number of voluntary roles with the Club, including Press Officer, in the years since.
He has worked as a Business Analyst in the Financial Services industry since 2005.
His analytical mindset lends itself to research work and in 2019 he started the Southport FC Former Players Association to help promote the history and heritage of the club.
His ambition was to recognise the hundreds of players that have made their contributions, big or small, along the way.
The same year the Former Players Association launched the Southport FC Hall of Fame.
After spending a number of years researching the very early years of Southport Football Club he contributed a number of articles to the club’s match day programme, club website and to the Former Players Association’s website, but, encouraged by Michael Braham, decided that it was perhaps about time he wrote a book!
