Legendary boxing champion Frank Bruno MBE has called for more action to support people with mental health needs ahead of his visit to Southport this autumn.
Frank, who became a world boxing champion when he won the WBC heavyweight boxing title in 1995, bravely shared his thoughts on the 20th anniversary of being sectioned for mental health.
His call for action has sparked huge support from people from across the globe.
He is due to speak to what is expected to be a packed audience at The Grand on Lord Street in Southport at an exclusive evening on Saturday, 11th November 2023 with tickets available here.
In a moving Tweet yesterday, Frank Bruno MBE said: “Morning 20 years ago today I was sectioned for the first time.
“It was a horrible experience, too detailed to put on a social media post.
“The publicity it received went worldwide. I was front page news for the wrong reason. TV crews at my door, helicopter overhead.
“I’m told that from that day mental health issues suddenly were not swept under the carpet, and hushed up.
“The only positive from that day for me is the awareness of mental health all over the UK.
“My main problem is that there is still lots of talk but far more action needs to be taken.
“Our Government needs to put their hands in their pockets and actually address mental health issues properly, not just talk about it.”
Frank’s Tweet met with a huge response.
So far, it has enjoyed over 4.5million views, 64,000 Likes and over 6,000 Retweets and thousands of messages of support from around the world.
He replied this morning saying: “Can I say a heartfelt thanks, no really, thanks for the thousands of messages after yesterday’s posting over 3 million views on Twitter.”
