Villaggio Cucina in Birkale in Southport

The popular Villaggio Cucina restaurant in Birkdale Village in Southport has closed its doors.

The eatery has been a popular fixture in the village since it opened in 2012.

Owners have blamed increasing food prices and energy costs for the closure.

In a statement, they said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the immediate closure of Villaggio Cucina.

Increased energy prices and soaring food costs have forced us to make this decision.

We would like to thank all our staff and customers for their support over the last 12 years.”

Scores of customers have shared their shock at the news.

On the Villaggio Cucina Instagram page, Trevor Moors said: “Absolutely gutted. I have so many wonderful memories from there. Please could you share your saffron gnocchi recipe it was my absolute favourite.”

Croziers of Birkdale said: “We are so sorry to hear this, what a huge loss to the village  we wish all of you out very best.”

Phoebe S said: “This is awful I’m so sorry to hear this and it’s extremely worrying to think such a great popular place has struggled.”
