Southport’s New Comedy Competition is taking place every Tuesday this July.

Each Tuesday night this month, Megafauna Cafe at Cambridge Arcade is playing host to 8 Mile Comedy, a competition for new and upcoming comedians from around the North West.

Each week eight comedians compete for a place in the final to win a coveted comedy trophy. The event is free for members of the public and cafe owner, Ben Chew, is hoping people will come down and support the event.

Megafauna is Southport’s only true vegan cafe which Ben opened just before the pandemic.

It’s testament to Ben and his dedicated staff that the unique cafe is still going strong.

Organisers of the 8 Mile competition, James Connell and Kevin O’Brien, have been organising regular local comedy gigs in Southport now for over three years, including a current monthly Comedy Gold night at the Southport Bijou Cinema.

James said: “The nights are open to a range of comics, including those who’ve only started comedy during the pandemic, when it was hard to get a live gig anywhere due to the restrictions.

“We’re hoping to give new comedians a chance to perform in a welcoming environment.

“The winner will go on to get a paid gig at the Comedy Gold night in front of a bigger audience.

“We understand it’s hard to get quality performance time when you’re just starting out – there’s a lot of new and young talent out there that struggles to get that.”

Megafauna Cafe owner Ben Chew said: “It’s great to support a local group of comedians like this.

“We love hosting here at Megafauna as it’s a great opportunity to promote local talent.

“This event gives us a chance to see some really great comedians and maybe even the next Lee Mack!”

Each night will also feature some rising stars in the North West comedy world. Booking is not necessary and entry is free. The event is on each Tuesday evening in July. For more information see:
