Aldi has revealed that it is looking to open its brand new supermarket in Tarleton in summer 2022.

Work on the store, on the site of a derelict former restaurant, will begin later this year.

The scheme will create 40 new jobs for the village.

Aldi opened a new store on Liverpool Road in Birkdale, Southport, in October 2018 and also operates a unit at Meols Cop retail park in Southport.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We will begin construction of our new Tarleton store later this year and plan to open the store in the summer of 2022. This will create up to 40 jobs and enable local people to shop and save closer to home.”

The low-cost supermarket will be built on the land near Tarleton Business Park, by the junction of Liverpool Road and Southport Road, which is currently occupied by the former Bay Leaf Indian restaurant. The building has been empty and in poor condition for some time.

It does however have some history, with the 17th century building previously known as the Ram’s Head pub.

Aldi has been planning to build on the site since 2018 and first received planning permission from West Lancashire Borough Council to build its store in 2020, only to submit a new and slightly modified proposal which was granted in March.

As part of the plan, local logistics firm GBA Services will build new offices on the same land, allowing it to increase its workforce without having to leave the area.
