Flood water continues to cause disruption for Northern customers travelling in the north west of England

Flood water continues to cause disruption for Northern customers travelling in the north west of England.

Heavy rain, falling on already sodden ground is result in fast-moving floods, particularly in the Wigan area.

Flooding is currently affecting the following routes and having a significant impact on services:

Wigan to Kirkby – flooding at Up Holland means services will be operated by rail replacement road transport

Wigan to Southport – flooding at Parbold and New Lane means the route is blocked and will be operated by rail replacement buses/coaches

Chorley to Adlington – flooding at Yarrow Viaduct means the route is blocked with significant impact on services between Blackpool North and Hazel Grove (suspended), Preston and Manchester Victoria (suspended), Blackpool North and Manchester Airport (diverted via Golborne).

A shuttle train service will operate between Manchester Victoria and Blackrod in both directions, with rail replacement buses between Preston and Bolton.

Flood water started to rise in the area this morning and, with levels now above the tracks, it is impossible to run services on the affected routes.

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern, said: “Unfortunately, because of the rising flood water, we are unable to run our usual services on several routes which is having a significant impact on our customers. 

“Colleagues from Network Rail are at each of the scenes and doing all they can to reduce the water levels and return rail services to the route.

“In the meantime, I am asking our customers to please be patient. Where we can’t run trains we will operate buses to keep people on the move, but these will add extra time to usual journeys.”

Delay Repay compensation is available for any customers whose journeys are delayed by 15 minutes or longer this afternoon.
