Over 300 PPE visors were delivered to 11 care homes across Southport yesterday in a bid to protect staff against coronavirus.

The life-saving equipment was made by Optimum Group, which was founded by Dave Connor.

The firm normally serves up cups of Costa Coffee or Kaspa’s desserts, but volunteers at the firm have instead turned their hands to using laser machines to making perspex visors and tackle the urgent need for PPE equipment for those working in our care homes.

The visors were delivered to the homes by Phil Gee, co-owner of Stand Up For Southport and Agency Of Boom, who has become the logistics officer for the Optimum Group PPE visors drive.

Phil, who is a social media coach, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to help such a wonderful cause.

“Despite the pressure they are all working under, each carer showed such gratitude for the gesture and it really made me appreciate even more, the amazing job they are doing each day.

“These visors are kindly being donated by local company The Optimum Group which runs 30 Costa Coffee branches in the area, plus two Kaspa’s Desserts.

“It feels good to be doing something worthwhile.”

Earlier this month, Stand Up For Southport revealed how The Optimum Group was urging people to help them ‘work around the clock’ to produce vital PPE equipment for frontline NHS staff, care staff and other key workers to protect them against coronavirus.

Optimum Group has been busy teaming up with businesses and schools with laser cutters to produce safety visors for those who need them.

The materials needed have been kindly donated by the group with the aim of manufacturing over 30,000 urgently needed PPE visors for local hospitals, care homes, funeral parlours, and others who so desperately need them.

Optimum Group founder Dave Connor said: “We were all watching the news and we were all devastated to see that frontline NHS staff and other key workers cannot get the PPE they need.

“Lots of lives are on the line here.”

The Optimum Group secured a large quantity of perspex and a blueprint for producing medical visors suitable for NHS staff and other key workers in the fight against coronavirus and Covid-19.

The firm has been trading since 2006 and operates 29 Costa Coffee stores in Liverpool, Ormskirk, Formby, Ellesmere Port, Runcorn and Sale, as well as two Kaspa’s Desserts outlets in Liverpool and St Helens. It is one of the most highly populated Costa franchise clusters in the UK. The 29 Costa branches boast 394 Costa staff while Kaspa’s has two branches with 48 staff.

Dave Connor said: “We are normally out there making cups of coffee, now we are making perspex visors, but we have to do something.”
