Thousands of runners took to the streets of Southport on Sunday (9th February 2025) for the Mad Dog 10k run, sponsored by Jollyes – The Pet People.

The pup-ular annual event started and ended at the new location of Victoria Park, home of Southport Flower Show, instead of the previous Stanley High School venue.

The race was founded several years ago by Southport Hesketh Round Table, whose volunteers built the race into one of the best in the nation. It was often voted Best 1k In The UK by Runner’s World magazine.

Mad Dog 10k founder and former Race Director Adrian Shandley was invited to be the official Race Starter this year for both the Pups’ and Adult races.

The Mad dog 10k theme each year always has a movie / dog pun at its heart.

This year’s theme was: Dog Pool and Wolferine.

It is always a fun event with lots of runners in fancy dress; competitors from running clubs all over the country; people of all ages and abilities; and live music at stages around the scenic course.

Phil Turner-Naylor, Jollyes head of marketing, said:

“For the second year running, we were thrilled to sponsor and take part in Southport’s community Mad Dog 10k.

“It was an incredible day and the atmosphere was fantastic – our colleagues, enthusiastic runners, and, of course, our mascot Jolly made it a memorable experience.

“At Jollyes, we love championing pets and their people, and the Mad Dog event was the perfect way to celebrate that spirit with energy, excitement, and plenty of fun.”

Mad Dog race organisers said:

“Adrian Shandley is not just the man behind the Mad Dog magic – he’s a VIP loved by so many in our amazing running community.

“His passion, dedication, and sense of fun are what have made this event so special over the years. Having him send runners off on race day was the perfect way to celebrate everything Mad Dog stands for!’”

Writing in the Stand Up For Southport Facebook group, Mel Pinnington said:

“Great new route, fantastic marshalls and entertainment.

“Had a really good feel to this event and even the weather gods were kinder than usual.

“Well done everyone!”

Steve Haw said: “Nice to see the weather was kind even though it was very cold! Well done to everyone involved.”

The Crazy Pups Race for under 16s started at 10am with the main 10k race setting off at 10.40am, as runners headed along the Promenade, towards Fleetwood Road, along Southport seafront (Marine Drive) and back into Victoria Park.
