Temporary road closures in Southport will be in place for six days from this Wednesday (6th July) in preparation for the 2022 Southport Air Show taking place.

Among those affected will be Marine Drive, with the coastal road due to be partially closed from Wednesday until Monday (11th July).

A Sefton Council spokesperson said: “The road will be closed between Weld Road and Marine Parade.

“Diversions are in place. However there are likely to be delays around Southport town centre.

“We apologise for any inconvenience.”

The local authority has temporarily closed or restricted a number of other roads in town this week, under the Road Traffic Regulation Special Events Act.

They said the reasons for this are to “temporarily close and restrict those roads listed below, before, during and after ‘The Southport Air Show’ event, to regulate the additional traffic, which will be attracted to the seafront area.

“To assist in the management of the car parks, and to permit the safe movement of pedestrians between the Air Show village and the Air Show village on the beach.

“Therefore, it will be necessary to temporarily close Marine Drive between the Pleasureland roundabout and the Marine Way bridge roundabout from Wednesday 6th July 2022 at 10am to Monday 11th July 2022 at 11.59pm.

To enable the safe erection and removal of the airshow village and movement of pedestrians during the event it will be necessary to temporarily close Marine Drive between the Pleasureland roundabout and the Marine Way bridge roundabout from Wednesday 6th July 2022 at 10am to Monday 11th July 2022 at 11.59pm.

Marine Drive will also be closed to through traffic between Fairway roundabout and the Marine Way roundabout and between Weld Road and Marine Way roundabout between 07.00 hours and 19.00 hours on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July 2022 to ensure the safety of spectators. To enable a free flow of traffic from the South to the event car park at Esplanade it is proposed to open Esplanade at its junction with Weld Road.

To enable a free flow of traffic after the event from all event car parks, it is proposed to restrict a number of manoeuvres, which will prevent any unnecessary congestion, these will be in effect from approximately 15.00 hours (weather dependant) on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July as follows :

  • Exit from Pleasureland car park – No right turns will be permitted
  • Exit from Princes Park car park – No right turns will be permitted

A number of roads in Southport will also see the imposition of no waiting / no loading restrictions from 07.00 until 19.00 hours on Saturday 9th July and Sunday 10th July 2022, including: Promenade,  The Esplanade, Victoria Way, Westcliffe Road, Weld Road, Rotten Row, Fairway, Princes Park access road, Palace Road, Ascot Close, Camberley Close, Oxford Road and part of Lulworth Road.

In order to preserve the integrity of the event, and control the passage of pedestrians and cyclists along Marine Drive, it is proposed to close Marine Drive to pedestrians and cyclists from Weld Road to Fairway with effect from 07.00 hours to 19.00 hours on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July 2022. The Order will continue in force before, during and after the Event, which takes place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July 2022.
