Scarisbrick Hall School in Southport

Following an initiative from the Head at Scarisbrick Hall School, Mr Jeff Shaw who is a co-founder of  www.theglobalclassroom.com a student at the school will take centre stage  today when they ask a question to UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO) as part of a ‘Global Classroom’ initiative launching live this afternoon.

The event will be beamed live around the world today to as many as 50 million people. 

The student at Scarisbrick Hall School will be selected by UNICEF Executive Director, Henrietta Fore to ask their question live via Microsoft Teams on behalf of the United Kingdom.

There will be other children representing other areas of the world asking their questions to the other speakers as the event starts at 4.30pm. 

This launch event will mark the start of ‘The Global Classroom’ with the aim of reaching children across 193 countries and engaging 150,000 pupils in a live, real-time interactive event.

The event is expected to help children understand what is Covid-19, how to protect themselves and a better understanding of what they can do to keep themselves safe and healthy.

The live broadcast takes place on World Hand Hygiene Day and will promote safe hand hygiene to all of the children. Content from distinguished guests and partners will cover The Global Classroom themes of body, mind and, addressing the unified global issue of Covid-19.

As part of its strategic communication efforts on Covid-19, WHO has been collaborating with partners to expand the reach of its public health campaigns, to produce compelling content for media to fight misinformation and to engage with partners and influencers to raise the profile to the global response.

Children from Scarisbrick Hall School around the world will be engaging live, in real time, for one hour with distinguished guests. 

Guests and partners will include: Director General of WHO Dr Tedros; Executive Director of UNICEF Henrietta H Fore; HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud; Samuel Eto’o (FIFA 2022 World Cup Ambassador); The Smithsonian Institute; and Microsoft.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “Covid-19 has turned lives upside down for people worldwide, including children, with millions forced home and disconnected from their regular classroom environment.

“But there is much we can and must do to care for the physical and mental health and wellbeing of children at this time.

“Initiatives like the virtual Global Classroom play an important role in connecting with young people and offering a place to share their thoughts and receive advice to protect their health and deal with challenging issues they may face.”

The overarching threads will follow the Sustainable Development Goals 17.
