The King has been pleased to appoint Mr Peter Oliver, OBE, DL, as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Merseyside

Peter Oliver, OBE, DL, from Southport has been appointed by King Charles as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Merseyside.

His appointment, announced by 10 Downing Street, follows the retirement of Mr Mark Blundell, CVO.

Peter Oliver, 46, was born and has spent his whole life in Merseyside. He lives in Southport.

He has had a career delivering complex strategic digital transformation programmes, beginning within the NHS in Liverpool, and then with a range of organisations in the public, private and third sectors, across the United Kingdom and overseas.

Alongside his career, Peter has held leading volunteer roles in several local, national and international charities, most notably The Scouts, and as Chair of the Board of a large local academy.

Peter’s voluntary work has been focused on supporting young people to get the best start in life, and has included developing successful collaborations between local charities, businesses and public sector organisations.

Peter Oliver said: “As announced by Downing Street, I am delighted to be appointed by The King as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside on the retirement of Mr Mark Blundell CVO.

“Lord-Lieutenant is a voluntary role responsible for leading the Lieutenancy in the County to proactively support the people who live, work and volunteer in Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St. Helens and Wirral, across our communities and range of organisations.

“The principal duty is to represent The King and to uphold the dignity of the Crown. This includes arranging visits by members of The Royal Family, presenting certain honours and awards, encouraging nominations for National Honours, The King’s Awards for Voluntary Service and for Enterprise, liaising with local units of the armed forces and their reserve and cadet forces, and supporting the local magistracy.

“Additionally, it is the Lord-Lieutenant’s role to encourage, thank and congratulate, to act as a catalyst and bridge-builder, engaging in the County’s civic, community, enterprise, and social life, and to encourage a wide range of voluntary activity.

“My first interactions with the Merseyside Lieutenancy took place over 20 years ago and I have been pleased to enjoy collaborating with three Lord-Lieutenants; most recently Mr Mark Blundell CVO.

“My professional career delivering complex digital transformation initiatives began within the NHS in Liverpool during 2001, and then since with a range of organisations in the public, private and third sectors, across the United Kingdom and overseas.

“Alongside this I have also held leading volunteer roles in several local, national, and international charities, notably The Scouts, and Chair of the Board of a local academy.

“My voluntary work has been focused on supporting young people to get the best start in life and has included developing successful collaborations between local charities, businesses, and public sector organisations.

“Merseyside has a remarkable heritage, a bright future, and is the special place I have been proud to call home my whole life.

“Our people are caring, diverse, talented and hardworking; our public services, educational institutions, businesses, community and voluntary groups are impactful and focused on supporting each other, with many at the cutting edge; we’ve amassed performing arts, musical and sporting accolades which put us on the world’s stage, and our impressive range of architecture and tourism attract visitors from across the globe.

“We achieve this – and more – together, working with cohesion, across boundaries, and with powerful spirit and intent at the heart.

“It will be my pleasure to lead the broad and committed Merseyside Lieutenancy team in continuing to play our role supporting the County. Over the coming months, we look forward to thanking Mr Blundell as we acknowledge his dedication and significant achievements over the last 8 years, and to working closely as we prepare for handover on 15 December.”
