Southport town centre will be a safer place for all after Southport BID and Merseyside Police teamed up to replace 12 CCTV cameras with brand new models.

The BID and the police have worked together to secure the scheme to ensure that Southport town centre remains a safe and welcoming space for local residents and visitors.

It will also provide a boost for local businesses in a further crime prevention measure.

Merseyside Police committed to eight cameras through the Government’s Safer Streets Fund, with a further four being funded directly by Southport BID.

The 12 new cameras provide clearer images and are more functional.

They can perform a seamless full 360 turn, meaning Sefton Arc can monitor incidents and assist Merseyside Police more effectively.

The cameras offer more assistance for officers on issues such as theft, disorder, and anti-social behaviour.

The cameras link in effectively to the Southport Town Link Radio scheme, which is led by Southport BID and includes a network of over 60 local businesses, as well as Merseyside Police and Sefton Arc.

Sefton Arc monitors the network of 26 cameras in Southport town centre 24 hours a day.

Sefton Council are also in the process of replacing two additional cameras through local funding.

Southport BID CEO Rachel Fitzgerald said:

“Southport BID is delighted to work in partnership with Merseyside Police and Sefton Arc to provide even more effective CCTV coverage in Southport town centre.

“We want people to ensure a welcoming environment for visitors, to enhance security for local businesses and to deter any would-be offenders.

“Southport town centre is the perfect place for living, working and visiting, and this investment in a better quality CCTV network will further cement that reputation.”

Merseyside Police Inspector Graham Fisher said:

“Southport town centre has a wonderful reputation as a destination for visitors who enjoy our shops, restaurants and coastline, and we want to ensure it remains a safe and welcoming place for residents and visitors to enjoy.

“Thanks to funding to tackle Serious Violence, and work alongside our partners at Southport BID, we have been able to replace CCTV cameras in Southport town centre so that all are working and capturing high quality images.

“I am confident this will not only prove to be a crucial help when identifying any offenders involved in anti-social behaviour and violent crime as well as business burglaries, but will act as a serious deterrent to anyone considering committing any crime in our town centre.”
