The staff at the Southport Market Bar are celebrating after winning the Best Pub, Bar, or Club of the Year category in the 2023 Your Southport Stars Awards!
The awards are organised by Southport BID to celebrate the positive impact being made by those in our business community over the past 12 months.
This year there were 12 superb Southport venues on the shortlist, ahead of a vote by members of the public.
The Your Southport Stars Awards saw over 35,000 people voting across all the categories.
The Best Pub, Bar, or Club Award was earned by Southport Market Bar, with The Windmill pub on Seabank Road walking away with the Finalist trophy.
The other bars on the shortlist were: Corridor Bar & Eatery; Southport Coaster; Guelder Rose; Fox and Goose; Coopers Bar; Kokomo; Banff; Tap and Bottles; The Windmill; Punch Tarmey’s; and The MonumenT Pub & Sports Bar.
Southport Market Bar Manager Lisa Birch said: “We did really well!
“It was great when we heard we had won it. We’d like to thank everyone who voted for us!
“I couldn’t be there at the Your Southport Stars Awards ceremony. But when we won, people were sending messages of congratulation, everyone in Mikhail Hotel and Leisure was delighted.
“I got lovely messages from Andrew Mikhail, and from his family. They were so pleased.
“We now have the Best Bar Award in pride of place on top of the bar for people to see when they walk in through the front doors of Southport Market!
“It helps by having such a big feature bar and having so much choice for people.

“We are lucky to have so many return customers. There are lots of people who come regularly from Southport, but also lots of customers who come to see us from elsewhere as well.
“Southport Market has been brilliant at attracting new visitors into the town.
“We get a real variety of customers.
“There are lots of families with children who come in during the day, and then from tea-time onwards we get more people coming to enjoy a great night out and we serve lots of cocktails, and some superb beers from Parker Brewery, which is based in Banks near Southport.
“It’s a great place to work. I have been working with Mikhail Hotel and Leisure for 21 years. I was working at the Eccleston Arms and then the Bold Hotel before Southport Market opened.
“During the Covid pandemic, Andrew Mikhail turned the Eccleston Arms into a food centre where people could get food from after all the panic buying in the supermarkets. I was helping with deliveries.
“We have other people who have worked with us for a while at the Southport Market Bar.
“We recently advertised for two new vacancies and we received 200 CVs from people.
“This is a lovely place to work.
“We were interviewing for jobs and after we heard we had won the award, we were telling people ‘you could work at the best bar in Southport’!”
The new-look Southport Market has been a great success since it was transformed by Sefton Council into a new food, drink and events venue following a £1.4 million investment in July 2021.
Lisa said: “Southport Market has been a really good place to be since it opened two years ago.
“I love working in here.
“We are surrounded by lots of really great local independent business owners operating all the food outlets, there is so much choice.
“The Market has been a really good investment for Southport.”
Thousands of members of the public voted for their favourite local businesses in the Southport BID Southport Stars Awards 2023.
Southport BID businesses were asked to nominate themselves for an award. That list was put out to a public vote.
More than 70 businesses were on the nominations list and 35,000 votes came from members of the public with the winners spread across nine categories.
Businesses ran their own campaigns asking the public to vote for them. Two Special Recognition awards were also given to organisations who make a difference within the town centre.
Southport BID chief executive Rachel Fitzgerald, said: “Southport has a vibrant business community. It is a privilege for Southport BID to be able to recognise the work they do for our town all year round.
“Southport Stars is our chance to celebrate the vision, resilience and commitment of our business leaders who are the economic pillars of Southport’s town centre.
“It is a unique place within Liverpool city region, and contributes significantly to the offer of our region. Southport is a great place to live, work, invest in and visit.”
