A Southport man will be locked up in ‘jail’ this September – as a birthday present from his wife!

Chief Engineer Andy Robertson will spend his 52nd birthday inside the cells inside the former Southport Magistrates’ Court building as part of the new Jail & Bail fundraiser for Queenscourt Hospice.

Andy was nominated for the challenge by wife, Vicky, who owns the VHS Hair Salon in Southport.

To engineer his ‘escape’, he must seek support to raise at least £999 in ‘bail’ money and complete a series of challenges throughout the day.

Either that – or hope that someone delivers him a birthday cake with a file hidden inside it…

People can donate to secure his release via his JustGiving page here: Andrew Robertson is fundraising for Queenscourt Hospice (justgiving.com)

Andy said: “This is everything to do with my wife! She heard about Jail & Bail and nominated me to do it without any hesitation.

“It just happened to fall on my birthday!

“Vicky thought it would be a unique birthday present. I can see why she did because I love doing zany things and this sounds very exciting! It will be quite a full morning and afternoon.

“I think it’s going to be fun. I am always up for a challenge.

“It’s great to be able to do something to raise funds for Queenscourt Hospice. I usually do a press-up challenge for the Teenage Cancer Trust every year and we have done lots of things to support Queenscourt Hospice over the years as well.”

Andy served for 26 years in the Royal Navy before earning his discharge in 2014.

He now works as a Training Manager for Mettler Toledo Safeline X-ray in Hertfordshire.

He said: “I love adventure, I love trying new things.

“I will have to count on lots of help from everyone to try and bail me out!

“I am really looking forward to it.”

The x-ray training manager will have to wait until the day itself to discover if the judge will let him off – or whether he will see right through him.

But which ‘crimes’ does he think wife Vicky is keen to convict him for?

Andy said: “We have a dog, a little Rottweiler called Harley, named after the motorbike. My crime will probably be not attending to the dog!

“Either that, or being really poor at DIY.”

Andy is among local people taking part in Jail & Bail.

Jail & Bail will see over a dozen community-minded people ‘locked up’ for a variety of ‘crimes’.

Their only way to escape? By completing daring challenges and seeking support from local people splashing out at least £999 in ‘bail’ money.

Every penny raised through Jail & Bail will go towards Queenscourt Hospice.

The charity provides care and support for residents across West Lancashire, Southport and Formby, 365 days a year.

Queenscourt is staging this brand new fundraiser in collaboration with Stand Up For Southport.

It takes place 10am-3pm on Friday, 15th September 2023 at Access Point, based inside the former Southport Magistrates’ Court building, on Albert Road in Southport.
