Southport’s Interfaith Group met for a preplanned meeting at the town’s Mosque, on Sussex Road, on Tuesday.

Debbie Fullwood (pictured far right), who is currently the group’s  chairperson, said: “As we gathered it felt particularly poignant to be coming together in genuine friendship and respect.”

Monday had been a sombre day for our town and memories of the tragedies and subsequent riots loomed large, as Southport Inquiry Chair Sir Adrian Fulford released the Phase 1 Report into the Southport Inquiry.

Debbie said: “It felt very appropriate that our guest speaker, Alastair Ross (pictured far right), representing  SACRE ( Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education), was there to give us a presentation on the work that Sefton SACRE is doing to review and revise the Religious Education syllabus used in local schools and how interfaith can be a part of that initiative.”

The group includes representatives of many of the town’s faiths including Baha’i, several Christian denominations, Judaism, Islam and Sikhism.

Debbie, who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, on Preston New Road, said: “It is our  mission to offer hope as we commit ourselves to promoting friendship, understanding and cooperation among our town’s faith communities, working together for the peace, social cohesion and well-being of Southport and all that live here.’’
