A Southport nurse celebrated an amazing 50 years of service on New Year’s Day.
Irene Smith, 66, who works at Southport District General Hospital, began her career as a cadet nurse on January 1, 1973, at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and from there took on several vital roles including becoming a Sister in A&E before her current position as a specialist nurse in VTE and anticoagulation.
As you would expect, Irene has a host of memories and had some good, and sad, times.
Reflecting on her career she said: “I distinctly remember being told by my teachers that I shouldn’t look to be a children’s nurse because it was too sad but I’m so glad I never took their advice.
“When I started as a cadet nurse nobody was allowed to call you by your first name. It was ‘Nurse Clark’ and to your colleagues Nurse, Sister, or Doctor. All sisters were extremely strict, and some were very scary to be honest. I recall working as a cadet in intensive care where the senior sister addressed me only as Clark until I had gone above and beyond one day and put a ventilator back together. I knew I had done a good job because she called me Nurse Clark after that!’’
She added: “When I turned 18 in 1974, I started my training as a state enrolled nurse. This took two years predominantly on wards with some periods in Practical Training School (PTS). My group was the first to wear white dresses with pink belts. There were no starched aprons and collars much to my disappointment, but uniforms were immaculate and always worn correctly with the hair always tidy. We had capes to keep us warm with starched hats.
“I worked nights across the Alder Hey site looking after the sickest children before starting my career in their A&E. On night shifts we used to walk past the famous rocking horse giving it a gentle nudge in the hope of scaring the next person who walked the corridor. It was said that Alder Hey was haunted and the horse would rock itself.
“After 13 years I left and became one of the first Practice Nurses when this role was just starting out. Although I enjoyed it, I missed Alder Hey, the pace of A&E and the team so I returned after a short while.
“In 1989 I started at Southport and Formby DG working on the bank between A&E, ITU and children’s ward, with regular shifts on AED, then completing my conversion to RGN and obtaining a permanent position and then as sister in charge. I worked permanent nights, and it was tough as we dealt with major trauma cases, many the result of no mandatory seatbelt wearing, and we did that sometimes with just three nurses and one doctor running the department which was amazingly busy.’’
One of the most enjoyable parts of Irene’s career has been the appreciation she has received from patients over the years.
She said: “We had many regular patients who out of choice lived on the streets of Southport, generally with alcohol problems. Over the years we got to know these patients very well and I would let them shower and change clothes from staff donations while at the same time getting their life story.
“Some of the stories were extremely sad and I always felt privileged that these patients shared these stories with me. I would see many of these patients along Lord Street and they would often shout “Hello Nurse” and it was always a pleasure to catch up with them.

“I also recall doing a transfer over to Alder Hey with a baby that was just a few weeks old. The baby was having apnoeic attacks and was extremely unwell and mum and dad were with me in the ambulance with myself and paramedic and it was an extremely stressful and emotive situation for all.
“Some 18 months later I was walking through town when two ladies stopped me with a toddler in a pram and came over towards me. One of the ladies hugged me and told me I had saved her baby’s life that night and thanked me for the care I’d given to her child on that night. I was completely overwhelmed and even thinking about it now brings tears to my eyes.
“These are the reasons why I love being a nurse, knowing that I have supported people and given my all making a difference to their lives.’’
Looking to the future Irene said: “I am currently a specialist nurse in VTE and anticoagulation and have just completed my re-validation which means I will be nursing for another three years, and hopefully more.
“I love being a nurse and feel privileged and honoured to have worked in the role for all these years and have so many memories of good, and bad, times.’’
