Award-winning Southport landscape gardener Greg Mook of Mooks Gardens is creating a show garden at this year’s Southport Flower Show

Award-winning Southport landscape gardener Greg Mook is taking a new angle on Southport Flower Show as he makes a welcome return to the event.

Greg, owner of Mook Gardens, will be creating one of his awe-inspiring show gardens for the 24th time, during which he has won a whole host of trophies.

It will be one of eleven show gardens that can be enjoyed by visitors to Southport Flower Show from Thursday 17th August to Sunday 20th August 2023 – including gardens from professional landscapers and charities.

Greg’s effort will be a real family affair as he works with his sons-in-law Dave and John at the park while his daughter Jenine is providing support via the office.

He will be creating an eye-catching 45-degree garden to show off the garden room on site, with angular raised borders giving more interesting shapes to the garden.

Porcelain paving and artificial lawn will make the garden as low maintenance as possible.

It will be a tranquil spot to sip wine, instead of doing the garden chores!

Greg said: “We are really looking forward to starting work at Victoria Park this Friday!

“There are a few gardeners down there already getting work underway.

“It has been five years since we were last doing a show garden at Southport Flower Show, it feels fantastic to be back.

“We have missed it! We can’t wait to get back and get cracking.

“For us, it is all about the build. We always have a great camaraderie with the other gardeners at Victoria Park.

“We are giving ourselves loads of time to create something special this year.”

The show garden being created by Mook Gardens will definitely be worth checking out.

Greg said: “We are looking forward to putting together a garden on an angle.

“We will have a big garden room going in.

“We are grateful to our sponsors who have supported us in this project including Sanctum which is providing the garden room, Newgate Nurseries in Longton which is supplying all the plants and flowers, Tile World in Liverpool which is supplying all the stone, and Websters which is supplying all our turf.

“This is going to be a real family effort. My daughter will be working in our office while my sons-in-law will be building the show garden with me.

“I’m looking forward to spending a bit of time with my family.”

The show gardens are an iconic part of Southport Flower Show each year, something that holds a huge fascination for local people.

Greg said: “I can’t go into a shop in Southport without someone saying to me ‘what are you doing for your show garden at Southport Flower Show this year’?

“It is fantastic to see. I love it. As a landscape gardener, creating a show garden at Southport Flower Show really raises your profile.

“If you are given the chance to build a show garden at the event then it means you are one of the best.

“If you are offered the opportunity then how can you not take it?

“We have done show gardens at 23 Southport Flower Shows so far – this will be our 24th.

“We love Southport Flower Show!

“I will be at the event over the four days it is taking place. I enjoy chatting with people coming to look around.

“Me and my wife love to have a walk around Victoria Park and take a look at the show.

“The best part for me though is the build leading up to it, seeing everyone in the show gardens, everyone in the Grand Marquee and the floral marquees, when everyone is really excited and putting everything together, when the whole place really smells of plants and flowers.

“That for me is what Southport Flower Show is all about – all the people who come together to create such a magnificent exhibition for everyone to enjoy.

“It is fantastic to have an event as big as Southport Flower Show here in our home town.

“It is the biggest independent flower show in the country, which is something to be really proud of.

“We are really lucky to have a huge event like Southport Flower Show here.

“The amount of people, and the amount of money, that it brings to Southport is just unreal.”
